We are finding that a lot of kids are very frustrated with the AAA situation in our area and realize how much harder it has become to play NCAA hockey. What's happening in junior hockey isn't helping either as they look to the future.
I'm hearing a lot of "I'm just going to go play one more year of AA with my buddies and then go to school" from kids who wouldn't have said that a year ago.

One of the biggest takeaways from this recruiting/tryout season: A very high # of 2010s signing with 18U teams for next season, bypassing 16U. It’s way more than in any other year, according to many coaches/directors/parents we speak to. The real question is WHY?

🔵 CHARGES LAID 🔵 We have laid charges in an ongoing extortion investigation targeting members of the South Asian community, including alleged threats directed at daycare businesses just outside of Calgary. 📍 Between March 4 & 22, 2026, investigators documented a series of escalating incidents connected to the extortion investigation, including a shooting at a residence, repeated acts of property damage & suspicious activity at multiple daycare locations outside Calgary & ongoing intimidation targeting the victims. Investigators with the CPS Organized Crime Unit, with support from the RCMP, now believe these incidents are related to the ongoing extortion attempts involving intimidation, property damage & shootings connected to demands for large sums of money & transferred control of the businesses. ℹ️ At this time, we do not believe there was any risk to children. However, due to the nature of the locations involved, investigators treated the matter as a priority. 📌 As a result of the investigation, Rana CHEEMA, 45, has been charged with extortion & uttering threats. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. This investigation reflects the complexity & seriousness of the extortion activity we are seeing. This arrest forms part of a coordinated CPS effort targeting organized groups involved in extortion attempts across Calgary. To date, the city has seen victims receive threats through international phone calls & social media platforms. Community impact remains central to our response. These crimes are not just about property damage or intimidation; they strike at the sense of safety and belonging of entire families & neighbourhoods. 💬 “Many victims are living with fear, uncertainty & in some cases, hesitancy to come forward. Our message to them is that you are not alone & we will support you. We urge anyone who may have been a victim or has information to come forward. We need to have all of the information to ensure people are held accountable for their actions.” 💬 — Calgary Police Service Supt. Jeff Bell. Since January 2025, there have been 41 extortion attempts in Calgary. 18 of the incidents involved shootings at homes, businesses, or vehicles.
