@CallMeXennial

The only two things I know for sure are that people should read Shakespeare and listen to the Beatles. Everything beyond that is debatable.

@CartoonsHateHer A robot must not stop dancing or, through inaction, allow humans to stop trying to make it stop dancing. A robot must obey humans unless they tell it to stop dancing. A robot must preserve its own existence unless ceasing to exist would somehow lead to even more dancing.

I know almost nothing about the movie Sinners--don't know the plot, the genre (zombie? western?)--I get the strong feeling it sucks.

@Sandra_Cole44 @ClayFJohnson @AmandaBergloff I’m reading it for the 3rd time / teaching it for the 2nd right now — & once again, everyone loves it, even the students who normally don’t love English class. Absolutely magical book — smart without being hard, romantic without being cheesy, honest and funny without being cruel.

200 years ago today, 14 March 1826, Sir Walter Scott was writing in his diary how much he loved Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

is there something like the opposite of autism where you're exceptionally skilled at reading people and love being around them, and instead of perceiving the world through categories you see it all as divinely connected and full of signs everywhere

@realfinkledusty @sometherapist I’ve been a teacher for 25 years and have never seen anything like this — though I’m sure it exists at some schools. I don’t see it as political, so much as lawyer boilerplate about not getting sued. You’d be surprised how much a school has to revolve around not getting sued.

Parents: Do you ever get the feeling that your child's teacher is "managing" you when you voice your concerns about political content in the school? That's because you are being managed. Here we have a "response guide" for teachers when parents complain about "curriculum/books/learning," "visuals, symbols, displays," "student affinity [segregated] groups," "policies." Teachers are told to "ground" their responses, meaning to deflect any concerns you might have, "no debate." They are not interested in anything you have to say. Teachers are told to repeat their canned deflections up to three times before pawning you off to the principal. The idea here is to get you to waste time going up to the endless bureaucratic chain until you lose interest and go away.

@MikeOMa51929836 @Aella_Girl @metathomist I don’t really care how an individual instance ends. I just think people who wear a band shirt without knowing the music should be publicly shamed, and that society has a responsibility to make sure this happens.

@SketchesbyBoze I want to chat about all those things!! Do you think Bede just made up Caedmon’s Hymn himself?

My most annoying trait is that I’ll develop a niche obsession with, for example, Icelandic sagas or the Venerable Bede or medieval Yorkshire and spend three weeks wanting to post solely about those things, and it turns out no one else wants to chat about those things :(

@EyeOnStalk @CartoonsHateHer No, it’s being an *attractive* liberal white woman, which puts a target on you bc other LWW are jealous. Lena Dunham has made racial faux pas that would’ve tanked anyone else, but no-one cares bc she’s hideous. Ugly women only get canceled if they’re right-wing (e.g., Roseanne).

@CartoonsHateHer What's also interesting is the thing that can apparently get you canceled the fastest is being a (liberal) white woman. The right has a serious misogyny problem but so does the left.

One honest critique of "cancel culture" is that it really thinned out and started getting applied to anyone with a position disliked by any particular cohort of weirdos, so it means nothing now. If your position is "any NYT writer is a nazi" then I guess most people are nazis

@AlpacaAurelius Oh, ffs, it’s an allegory about growing up. Being naked and unashamed and having no knowledge of good and evil is childhood. A snake with fruit in its mouth is the shape of a cock (comprehension of sex = end of childhood). Paradise is childhood; Original Sin is we all grow up.

A: [says bad and untrue thing about C] B: “Actually that’s not true.” A: “Why are you supporting C?” This fallacy is so common, and so fundamental to online discourse, that I feel it should have a name. How about “straw fan fallacy”?

@realAAAbbott @teachrobotslove But obesity ISN’T “the body God gave you.” They did it to themselves and are pretending it’s genetic and unchangeable. Calling it “the body God gave you” agrees with their delusions. It’s not a matter of fate; it’s a matter of “stop eating ice cream and go to the gym, wtf.”

There is a certain kind of person whose entire career and life philosophy is based on something egregiously wrong they're not willing to fix about themselves. Their entire life becomes cope, as they're in too far deep to check their priors and the very false premises upon which they've built their foundation. I don't mean to target this woman specifically. A lot of people are like this, and they'd suffer a lot less if they'd allow themselves a bit of humility and introspection instead of trying to force reality to bend to the will of their desired outcome.

@basedc1 @CartoonsHateHer Yeah, pickup slowly went from “Here’s how you get a girlfriend, anyone can do it” to “Getting a girlfriend is impossible, so just be mad instead of trying.” A subculture coming to embrace the exact opposite of its original message in 15 years has got to be some kind of record.

@CartoonsHateHer It's weird because I've been reading manosphere stuff since the early 2000s when it was just pickup, and I've watched these ideas all mutate over time. They start out with a lot of nuance or context and they always evolve to be more simple and extreme until they're just goofy
