Historically, when this was diagnosed as Gender Identity Disorder or transsexualism through strict clinical pathways, it was considered extremely rare. Estimates were around 0.005%-0.014% of males and 0.002%-0.003% of females. Now we are told that around 0.5%-1.3% of the population is transgender, with some youth surveys claiming even higher percentages. Depending on what figures you compare, that’s dozens to hundreds of times higher than the old clinical estimates. That should make people stop and ask what exactly is being measured now, because it clearly isn’t the same thing. It looks like we’ve moved from careful assessment to rapid affirmation. Puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries are often talked about like harmless and reversible tools for self-discovery or self-expression. They are not. They are serious medical interventions with real lifelong consequences. A lot of people dealing with gender distress may actually be struggling with autism, unresolved trauma, internalised homophobia, body image issues, identity confusion, personality difficulties, and plenty more besides. Those people need proper help to address the root cause of their distress, not a conveyor belt toward transition before they fully understand what any of it means. We cannot change sex, and too many vulnerable people are being told that they can. No life-altering treatment should be fast-tracked when someone does not fully understand the risks, limitations, and permanence involved. Years ago, we as transsexual people were expected to go through therapy, psychiatric care, and attempts to rule out every other explanation before transition was considered. It was seen as an absolute last resort, not as a first option. I entered psychiatric care at 11 years of age and didn’t begin medical transition until 21. In this time frame, I had 10 years of therapy, multiple types of antidepressant, multiple antipsychotics, and a three-month psychiatric hospital stay. Everything else was tried first. Nothing worked. Transition did. Today, I live a functional and fulfilling life. I have truly found joy. But that does not mean transition is the answer for most people. It helped me, and it can help a very small minority of us, but it is exceptionally rare that this is the right path. That is why gatekeeping matters. Proper assessment, time, challenge, and differential diagnosis are not cruelty. They are not conversion therapy. They are safeguards. They protect vulnerable people from irreversible mistakes while still allowing truly sex dysphoric people access to treatment. Safeguarding is not hate. Reality matters, especially in medicine. Sex is real and cannot be changed.

Responding to a comment about vaginal atrophy in transgender female to male and why biology matters when you choose the path of transition. Testosterone will create problems and if you do not understand this how are you making informed consent as well how can a child make these choices when they have barely lived life. Keep calling me transphobic all you want you just prove how toxic and off the wall the “ trans” community has become… GENDER AFFIRMING CARE IS NOT CARE

The lies about sports and trans athletes are so stupid and so gaslighting! Trans are “ banned “ from destroying female sports that’s what it’s about. Stop telling little kids they can change their sex and stop telling trans identifying males they are women and have no advantage. CREATE YOUR OWN SPORTS LEAGUES LIKE WOMEN DID.

The UK is threatening a "conversion practices" ban. We know from other countries that this means more kids who would otherwise happily grow up LGB thrown onto the lifelong conveyor belt of pills, surgeries, sterilty and anorgasmia.
LGB Alliance@AllianceLGB

We are deeply concerned by the announcement in the King’s Speech that the UK Government is to draft a bill to ban what it calls “abusive conversion practices.” We oppose coercive and abusive practices. But there is already a robust legal framework in place to deal with assault, coercion, harassment, abuse and safeguarding failures. The question Parliament must answer is why new legislation is needed when existing laws already protect people from abusive conduct. Our concern is that this legislation is increasingly being used to pursue a more nefarious objective - creating an affirmation-only framework regarding “gender identity” in which lawful therapeutic exploration is effectively shut down. That would leave same-sex attracted people, vulnerable young people and those struggling with trauma, identity or mental health issues with fewer options for support. Same-sex attracted people should not lose access to lawful counselling because therapeutic neutrality has become politically unacceptable. Poorly drafted legislation could also create wider consequences for families, clinicians, employers and safeguarding professionals. We do not believe new legislation is necessary and we will continue to make the case that existing laws already protect people from genuine abuse — without creating further risks for vulnerable individuals, families and professionals. Please make these points - with personal examples if possible - to your MP, MSP or MA.

The types of people we are all angry at ARE a real problem, but abolishing the Gender Recognition Act would not solve it. I’m a transsexual man (biologically female), and I do not have a GRC because I do not believe in falsifying documents, so this is not self-interest talking. I just want to explain why this would not fix what people think it will. A GRC is mainly an administrative legal document. It changes sex on records like birth, marriage and death certificates. That is it. It does not give anyone the right to harass people, ignore safeguarding, enter any space they like, or break the law. You don’t even need a GRC to change your passport sex marker, just a GP letter. GRC's are not handed out casually - it requires a formal application, medical evidence of a diagnosis of persistent sex dysphoria, proof of living in a new name/sex for a minimum of two years, and a declaration of permanence. I promise you this; the voyeurs, fetishists, predators and opportunists that people keep citing are unlikely to have one. They do what they do without it. They also likely do not have a diagnosis of sex dyphoria, so it's very unlikely they'd qualify for one in the first place. If we want to fix this problem, target bad behaviour directly. Enforce boundaries, safeguarding, and existing law. Repealing paperwork would leave the same bad actors exactly where they already are, it would not change a thing. If the aim is simply to stop legal document changes, fair enough. But if the aim is to solve the problem affecting women and children, this will not do it, and the approach needs rethinking.

Gender Identity Disorder was first set as a diagnosis in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (used to diagnosis mental illnesses) in 1987. It was changed to Gender Dysphoria in 2013 to erase the stigma attached to the word Disorder. Note the prevalence rate. I wonder if some of those interesting studies have lapsed due to not wanting to find the biological, genetic, or psychological influences that may be causal and perhaps able to be addressed. Note the paragraph that advises the proper course of treatment to make sure the person is doing it for the right reason! And how much higher the success rate was. labs.la.utexas.edu/mestonlab/gend…
