Images from the drone overflight in Shawn Willsey’s live stream (link below), show where the lava claimed our station! Compare the location of the track - green arrow marks the station. Agonisingly close to escaping, but astonishingly close to the vents. Some truly unique data!

Here seen in happier times (seismometer itself is beneath the stone circle!), if only it was a bit further up the hill... but location choice is a big pile of compromises, and putting stations uphill increases wind noise, amongst other drawbacks! (Eg carrying heavy batteries..)

We all have our fingers crossed that this batch of lava flows will stop soon enough that Grindavík may avoid this same fate.

In the end, it was probably less than 100 m from the eruption fissure (map c/o @Vedurstofan) We previously rescued 2 stations ~ 150 m and ~ 200 m from the 2021 and 2022 lavas, and the closest where we held nerve have been ~ 400 m in 2022, and ~ 250 m in December. Risk vs reward!

After 3 years and 5 eruptions, we finally have our first casualty. RIP to the Melhóll (MELH/meh) seismic station, which has faithfully recorded all the action on the #Reykjanes Peninsula since it was installed in June 2020. All data was safely telemetered up to its dying moments

And the coherence on Askja is back. Still ~30 cm of uplift between Septeber 2022 and July 2023. Amazing 🤩

ICEYE’s data has helped to predict the location of the recent eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland and to infer the depth of the lava. The data was used by the Iceland Met Office which is closely monitoring the volcanic unrest in the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Our sampling team collected quenched lava yesterday. The samples collected from the beginning of the eruption have been analyzed and we are evaluating the data! Results soon!

Those watching the #tremor graph from @naspmon station faf might be worried the eruption has ended - instead, it has had to be rescued from the path of the lava! 🌋 Hopefully @CamVolcSeis station odf (safely up on the ridge at Oddafell) will be connected to @Vedurstofan soon!

Since the #eruption began, the #earthquakes have moreorless stopped, and been replaced by seismic tremor. This is the incoherent background “hum” caused both by magma moving beneath the ground and venting at the surface - seen mainly at higher frequency (blue & green 2nd plot).

Stunning images to be waking up to (Pic from @RUVfrettir webcam). The eruption is reported to be 10x bigger than 2021 and 3x than 2022. Communities to the north, including Reykjavik, were warned about potential gas pollution during the night🧵

As excited as we all are *please* follow the current advice to stay away from eruption site. The site will be open to all as soon as the situation stabilises but the very start of fissure eruption is hugely dangerous because additional fissures can open anywhere #Fagradalafjall
