Satellite data from @CopernicusEU #Sentinel5P #TROPOMI show a band of #volcanic SO₂ advancing over the NW #UK and #Ireland on Aug 24, behind a cold front. Observations of SO₂ over Europe are set to improve (-> hourly) with the upcoming launch of the #geostationary #Sentinel4.

@eddy_weather @highlandweather That's right, there's no chance that the Icelandic SO₂ emissions are impacting recent Scottish weather. Magnitude and altitude both far too low.

@HubGeology @phivolcs_dost @News5PH @nababaha I think this is the first #Kanlaon eruption in the satellite era to produce a significant amount of SO₂ (more than a few kilotons). The November 2023 #Ulawun eruption emitted ~0.1 Tg SO₂.

@simoncarn @phivolcs_dost @News5PH @nababaha Hey that’s actually far larger of an SO2 output than I expected for Kanlaon. Neat. How does it compare to other recent eruptions (of Kanlaon)? Also I forget what Ulawun’s major eruption last year produced.

@Weather_West @GOESguy Satellite observations are somewhat variable but suggest a total of ~0.6-1.5 Tg SO₂ emitted by the two #eruptions. Even at the high end, this is below the ~5 Tg threshold for measurable #climate impacts.
