In part that is because Rayner was seen as something different and you hear versions of “i thought she was different but when she got power she was the same”. That might be very unfair and people don’t know the details. Her favourability in Jan was -35, with only 14% positive.

Brits disagree with Angela Rayner on migration policy according to this @Moreincommon_ polling
Kitty Donaldson tweet media
Aubrey Allegretti@breeallegretti

🚨 Major intervention tonight by Angela Rayner at a Mainstream rally in which she: - Warned Starmer he’s “running out of time” and Labour is now seen as “the Establishment” in some voters’ eyes - Branded looming migration reforms “un-British” - Gave a rallying cry for Labour to emulate successful progressive parties that have seen off the threat from a surge on the right In her sights were plans to hike the automatic qualifying period after which legal migrants gain the right to permanent residence from 5 to 10 years. Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, announced the reforms earlier this month and said they were vital to stop a £10bn drain on the public finances - due to extra demands for healthcare and housing. But Rayner said: “Enforcing a fair deal is not the same as ripping up a deal halfway through. "Many people came here to Britain on the understanding that if they've worked in the sectors where we needed them, obeyed the law and paid their taxes, that they could stay. If we suddenly change that, it pulls the rug from under those that have planned their lives and commitments and they're contributing to our economy and to our society. That would not just be bad policy, but a breach of trust. "The people already in the system who made a huge investment now fear for their future. "They do not have stability and they do not know what will happen. "We cannot talk about earning a settlement if we keep moving the goal posts, because moving the goal post undermines our sense of fair play. It's un-British." There were also some sharp critiques of Starmer’s political approach. Rayner said: "It's our job to show the British people whose side we're on. Like other social democratic parties across the West, the very survival of the Labour Party is at stake. And it's that serious for us, because political parties do not have the right to exist." She added: "In Canada, in Austria, in Norway, the centre-left parties surged back to win again. They showed that they would tackle the issues that mattered most to people and voters decided that a progressive government that puts people first and lowers the cost for ordinary people was the better choice… “We cannot just go through the motions in the face of decline, there's no safe ground for us, and we're running out of time.” Holding a glass of white wine as she approached the podium to speak, Rayner made clear she plans to be more vocal after her seven months on the backbenches. “I’ve got a lot to say and I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” she told the room.

With the Greens in the ascendency what are the major barriers to those who wouldn’t yet vote for the Green Party? Lack of experience comes out on top followed by concerns about trusting them with country’s defence and security, greens unlikely to win and immigration policy.

With historical figures set to be replaced on banknotes with wildlife. How does voting intention vary by which animal people would most like to see on a bank note? 🌹🦌Bambi fans must vote Labour as the party leads among those who fancy a deer on their cash. ➡️🦉Reform has a big lead among Hedwig fans e.g. those who'd pick a barn owl*, but also those who say none of the above. 💚🐰Fans of Bambi's friend thumper clearly vote Green as the party leads among those who'd like wild rabbits on the notes, rabbits (in headlights or otherwise) are the choice where the Tories do best. *I know Hedwig wasn't a barn owl.

David Miliband’s excoriating critique: 💥After Gorton & Denton, Lab needs leadership 💥The Govt must explain its “cause” 💥Jettisoning 5 missions a mistake  💥Manifesto commitments outdated 💥Reset with EU “emblematic of problem” 💥Britain needs a “bargain” with international capital to grow

Exc: David Miliband intervenes in the @NewStatesman to warn that after Gorton and Denton, the government must start explaining its purpose - and lead. Rare and important intervention.

I will preface this by saying firstly that this is *just one poll*, and secondly it comes quickly after some very good press for the Greens post Gorton and Denton win. But. Labour are staring into the abyss right now. And this, Caerphilly, and Gorton and Denton are staring back
YouGov@YouGov

Our latest voting intention (1-2 March 2026) has the Greens on their highest figure ever recorded by YouGov, significantly ahead of Labour, who are on their lowest figure to date Reform UK: 23% (-1 from 22-23 Feb) Greens: 21% (+4) Conservatives: 16% (-2) Labour: 16% (-2) Lib Dems: 14% (=)

The government's problems are not primarily about "comms" but lack of clarity of purpose. But it's quite striking that there's a direct correlation between how unpopular a policy is and how many have heard of it. What can they do about it?

Even before all this @Ipsos_in_the_UK data found likeability ratings for both Starmer and the Labour party were at or near historic lows. Labour still most liked party (but only just), but Starmer the most disliked leader, with a bigger gap between party and leader than opponents

Obvs at this stage it’s hard to imagine Starmer lasting to the summer let alone to the next election. But it’s also hard to see why Labour MPs would want to move now. Just because people say they will?

Starmer’s departure is presented as imminent and inevitable. It doesn’t actually need to be. He has a large majority and successor isn’t obvious. An 8 point deficit at this stage of a parliament is perfectly surmountable in 2029 too.
