@evankinney This is why you should never believe your loyalty is truly appreciated in employment.
You need to go it alone if possible.
Be your own boss.

guess who got laid off today! 🫠
i am genuinely so confused and bewildered
like, i spent the past week debugging the rivalry system while recovering from pneumonia
and just in the past few days i’ve had multiple directors tell me how much they appreciate everything i do

@evankinney Yeah. Well, I guess in future spending more time buying key people coffee and socializing more is the winning strategy at large companies like this.
English

i have done so much for this company and our games
so many late nights
so many weekends
so many live events, and competitive events, and new features, and new seasons
solid performance reviews every time
with multiple people mentioning how critical i am and what an impact i make across multiple teams
just to be thrown out
i don’t get it.

@4iiEiie3304 There’s no evidence Nintendo would be this interesting right now.

Nintendo will be attending Pax East 2026.
We don't know what games they are bringing yet.
Pax East starts on March 26th.

@MikeStrawMedia Switch 2 had a completely mid launch line up. -The rest of the 2026 seems to be completely empty. Are mario movies and theme parks now doing all the heavy lifting?

@zack_overflow Perhaps when it was still openGL 1.2 that might’ve mattered. From 2.1 VBOs I strongly suspect that optimizations in the device driver would easily notice occluded geometry, using the painters algorithm and things like that would never be drawn anyway.
English

Something to think about:
For years Minecraft lacked the most foundational of gamedev optimizations: occlusion culling, basically don't render blocks covered by others
This meant stuff like underground caves you literally couldn't see were being rendered.
So players had to limit their render distance and if you played on a really shitty computer you had to cap your render distance to only a few chunks and barely see anything
Not rendering blocks you can't see is like the first thing you think of when you're thinking about optimizing Minecraft
Despite missing this very basic optimization, Minecraft still became the best-selling game of all time
English

@tetsuoai Downvote because we all know that real technologists preach about how Greta is the antichrist for $200/lecture. How does BSP or deferred rendering solve that?
English

@tsoding Yes, this is a fair point. We could certainly reproduce thief today more easily (with or without a custom engine). The main obstacle remains the time it takes to create the assets.

Here is a random thought I've been having for a while already. People were making 3D games WITHOUT hardware acceleration in 1998. Surely today in 2025 CPUs are magnitudes more fast than in 1998.
So you can probably make a software rendered 3D game today that looks and performs much much better than Thief and don't have to deal with the bullshit that is the modern Graphics API and be EXTREMELY portable. It's not gonna be the cutting edge AAA gaming, but you can surely make something indie-ish cutesy low-poly no problem.
I feel like today it's more feasible than in 1998.

I miss the good old days when we wrote simple C programs using the dead simple CGI API. No frameworks were required. Just ~100 lines of C code to implement your own server. No dependencies. Your whole website/server recompiled in ~1 second.

@SebAaltonen @Jonathan_Blow There’s only so many books and course certifications you can sell with a simple and effective setup like that. The merchandising alone from new logos are worth millions!

@stefanmakes @PierreDeWulf Some say the AI invented SlopScript to make the radioactive mushroom clouds more easily embraced by the remaining humans.
English

@PierreDeWulf 2026: AI becomes self-aware, invents LLM SlopScript to fix JavaScript frameworks, rewrites the entire web in SlopScript and we become forever reliant on AI
English

@PierreDeWulf JS should have “fixed” JS, not an endless parade of stupid frameworks caked on top.
English

@NintendoAmerica Your marketing is writing checks your developers can’t cash. Where are all the Switch 2 games?
English

@growing_daniel They nickel and dime you to death man. If you're running over 1m users you should test it on some other infra you can save a lot of money and time.
AWS is intentionally convoluted to make it hard to leave.
English

@growing_daniel Yeah a ZBOX in the basement hooked up by LAN to the house/office 1Gbps does a great job compared to renting AWS compute.
