'Don't you see how this looks!?' @BenKentish confronts Labour's Luke Charters on the 'double standard' of Andy Burnham being 'anointed' after he demanded a general election from the Tories.

“Manchester council’s spiky leader, Sir Richard Leese, primus inter pares, took to calling Burnham a “glorified bus conductor” in private’ Glorious, cliché-destroying profile by Jen Williams ft.com/content/9949d9…

Kemi lost her head at PMQs - and afterwards too. It's not the first time. She's compared me to a Gestapo officer. I wonder what it is about a working class woman driving record investment in state schools by ending private schools' tax breaks that the Tories hate so much.

Understandably the relationship between Downing Street and Team Burnham is strained. Keir Starmer and his probable successor talked yesterday for the first time since before the byelection: I’m told their meeting was “frosty”. Burnham’s camp remains concerned about the short handover timetable - just over three weeks to prepare for government. Starmer allies say he had no qualms about denying Burnham (who originally wanted September) a long coronation - though insist he’s serious about an orderly handover. “There was a strong push from the Burnham camp to be given longer. But why should they tell Keir they want him out, then expect him to manage the ship through a potentially difficult summer? “Keir will of course cooperate on transition, but it will be through gritted teeth,” one ally tells me. Some in Burnham’s team are exasperated about shorter timetable. “The last lot had years to prepare and still fucked it up. We’ll just have to do it in three weeks,” one says. “The length of the transition will focus minds.” theguardian.com/politics/2026/…
