Here's the truth: "AI needs data. Lots of data." Great. You've got historians at multiple sites. Years of process data. You want it? It's there. Here's what people rarely talk about, having data, and having usable information are two totally different things. We've been working with @Canary Labs for years. Yes, they're a historian — and a damn good one. Collect, store, reliable as hell. Check, check, check. But here's what separates them from the pack: They don't just store data. They make it useful. How? First: Performance for Real. Canary invested a lot of time building a compression algorithm that can pack massive amounts of data into a tiny flat file. Great, what's that mean? Ridiculous retrieval speed. Years of high-fidelity data, pulled back in seconds. When an agent needs to compare what's happening now (current state) to what happened 10 hours ago — or 10 months ago — that speed is crucial, and it's there. Second: Context Turning Data into Information, and Analysis. Canary invested heavily in giving you the ability to contextualize, and analyze the data with Axiom which shows you trends and patterns, and has more aggregation tools than any other historian. Ok, so it's historian on steroids then? It's aggregation, trending, pattern detection. Can your historian chart 10 hours of data in 10-second increments without the system choking? Probably not. Third: Models. Not the runway kind — think context, asset, and enterprise models. "TC-100" at one site and "Reactor_Temp_01" at another get reconciled into a unified asset model. The data isn't just stored anymore — it's organized in a way that systems (and humans) can actually understand across the enterprise. Fourth: The Open Philosophy. And that changes everything. Canary uses the same API internally that's available externally. MQTT connectors, Ignition, OPC HDA — all handled the same way. Why it matters: AI agents access the historian the exact same way dashboarding and analytics tools do. Picture this: An agent gets an alert — temperature issue on Reactor 1. It checks the UNS for current state. Queries the historian for the last hour, 10 hours, 24 hours, etc. Then hits the CMMS like MaintainX: "Show me all work orders where the failure cause was a temperature issue on Reactor 1." All of that happens programmatically. No custom integrations. No middleware breaking with updates. The openness makes connecting an MCP server trivial. The agent surfaces the pattern: same failure mode, same reactor, third time in 60 days. Recommends proactive replacement before the next batch run. Now go refill your coffee while it does its job. This is the historian's role in Industry 5.0. Not just storing what happened. Being a reliable, fast, open data layer that AI agents can query the same way humans query dashboards. The gap between "we have data" and "we have usable information" comes down to whether the foundation was built for this. Most historians weren't. Canary is. Period. Traditional historians were built to be archives.
