My least favourite thing about South Africa is how we have an expanded youth unemployment rate of over 60% and a poverty headcount at nearly 30% but pundits and political debates are centred on... *checks notes*... the race and gender of political leaders. Not what party has the best policies to grow the economy. Not what party has the best track record for creating jobs. Not what party delivers infrastructure projects. Not what party has expanded social services to the most vulnerable. It's so regressive. It's so dangerous for our democracy. It's a bright neon signpost of just how utterly immature and basic South African punditry and politics can be.

The DA top 10 vs. the ANC top 7. Both parties seem to suffer from diversity & inclusion issues, perhaps in different directions.

@ZaWJBek @Bushveld_Lover @amuse The unemployed grant beneficiaries who vote for the ANC outnumber the employed who probably don’t vote for the ANC 🙄 So the ANC stay in power by dishing out grants

RACISM: In 1994, South Africa replaced one racialized system with another, resulting in a stagnant economy. Growth has hovered near zero for more than a decade, per capita income is falling, and inequality is the highest in the world. Race is now even more central to economic rules. The clearest example is its treatment of its native-born son Elon Musk, who cannot operate his own business in the country unless he gives a third of it to a black man. x.com/cb_doge/status…

Zimbabwe's commercial farmers produced 200,000 tons of tobacco in 2000. By 2008, after Mugabe's "land reform," output collapsed to 48,000 tons. Corn production fell 60%. The country that once fed southern Africa now imports food. Property rights aren't just legal abstractions; they're the foundation of productive agriculture. When you destroy secure ownership, you destroy the incentive to invest, improve, and maintain capital. Zimbabwean farms didn't fail because of drought or bad luck. They failed because socialism always fails. You cannot redistribute your way to prosperity, only to shared poverty. Will African governments ever learn? Afro-marxism is probably the single most devastating ideology there has ever been in terms of hours of human suffering.

We are usually subjected to crass consumerism & showing off by those who have struck it big in tenderpreneurship. But Nontobeko Eunice Mkhonza— whose company, Nomakhuwa Trading Project, struck it big in the lucrative Tshwane Metro water carting business, is made differently. With R95 million banked in financial year 2025 alone, she still lives in a modest RDP house in the dusty Soshanguve Block HH; drives a modest VW Polo; & her kid attends a no-fees public school. She also doesn’t have a single water tanker or supporting water cartage infrastructure registered in her company’s name. Discreet, New Money done right. Again, thank you to ActionSA & the ANC for empowering upcoming businesses owned & run by Black, strong & independent women👏🏽👌🏽

In the latest twist in the metro’s water-tanker scandal, a Soshanguve woman with no tankers to her name has emerged as a big winner – raising questions about fronting ebx.sh/FHo0zd

@SundayTimesZA @colin_porki This is hilarious. The poor woman was used as a front to get the tenders. The ANC, EFF and ASA are making money from poor people.

A Sunday Times investigation found that the City of Tshwane paid Nontobeko Mkhonza’s company R95m to cart water in financial year 2025, despite strong indications her company lacked the equipment, infrastructure and capacity to perform services at that scale tinyurl.com/32s2dmfd

1/6 SARS is celebrating “record” tax of over R2T this year. That’s not a profit number, it’s a very large debit order on the real economy. #SARS #Tax #SouthAfrica 2/6 Since 1994, SARS has collected tens of trillions of rand in tax. The real question isn’t how much was collected, but what the country looks like after that money leaves households and businesses. #Economy #PublicFinance 3/6 In a low‑growth, high‑unemployment environment, record tax collection isn’t automatically a success story. It can just mean you’re squeezing the same orange harder while the orange itself is getting smaller. #Growth #Jobs 4/6 When you look at a country’s finances, you don’t just ask “how much did we collect?”. You also ask: what happened to investment, productivity, and the condition of public assets and services? #BalanceSheet #Investment 5/6 If most of your revenue is tax, with little coming from dividends, asset returns or a growing tax base, it suggests you’re funding today by leaning heavily on the same taxpayers, not by making the pie bigger. #FiscalHealth #Sustainability 6/6 South Africa doesn’t only need better tax collection. It needs stronger growth, better use of existing funds, and a healthier national balance sheet so the orange itself gets bigger, even if the squeeze stays the same. #SouthAfrica #Budget #Economics
