The Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates met yesterday to discuss an ordinance aimed at further restricting ICE operations on Cape Cod. This man said what millions of Americans are thinking but are too afraid to say out loud: “I am not an uncompassionate individual. But my generosity has been abused, and I am sick of it! I am sick of being treated as an indentured servant to foreign nationals in my country and in my community. Who wants some good news? Today is the day TPS (Temporary Protected Status) ends for Haitians and Syrians. Due to the loud noise we made, and a few Congressmen coming out in favor of deportation, ICE starts removing them this week. I fully support this, who else does?

Common sense prevailed last night. In a 4-1 vote, the Barnstable Zoning Board of appeals (ZBA) overturned the building permit for the proposed Hyannis homeless shelter relocation from its current downtown location to a site near schools, homes, and neighborhood businesses. It was David vs. Goliath as Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) and Catholic Charities brought their well-funded machine, high-powered attorneys, and carefully rehearsed lectures arguing that the shelter qualified for religious protections under the Dover Amendment. We’ve seen this playbook before. In 2024, HAC argued the Eagle Pond shelter in the Town of Dennis qualified for Dover Amendment protections because of its educational purpose. This time, the argument shifted to religious protections, but the strategy was the same. Just don’t expect Goliath to walk away. There is too much money and too many political operatives invested in this to believe it’s over. The next step is likely land court.
