Private equity turned neighborhood kids' sports into a luxury product. Community leagues out. Elite travel teams in. Profit and predation teaching kids and parents that casual play isn't an option. And youth sports is only for those who can afford it.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

NEW: Youth sports is now costing parents as much as $25,000 a year. Private equity and corporations are turning a childhood pastime into something only the wealthy can afford. Youth sports has become a $40 billion industry, and the steep costs are crushing American families.

Fanatics has taken over the sports collectibles market — leaving little competition that allows them to continue hiking costs on fans. "Now, with Panini's exclusive licenses expired and Topps under Fanatics control, Upper Deck remains the only competitor, and only in hockey." In her recent paper, @CapitolKVD found there was "significant price increases for [trading card] boxes and packs, with some products doubling in cost within a year of Fanatics taking over production."

Carlos Alcaraz — World No. 2 and 7-time Grand Slam champion — has withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon with a wrist injury. He’s only 23. And he’s not alone. Upper body injuries in tennis are on the rise. Repeat injuries are more frequent. Injuries are more severe. Players are retiring early. This is the life of today's professional tennis player. How did we get here? The ATP and WTA force players into a 45-week season across six continents. Tournaments stretch up to three weeks. There is no off-season to recover. And the cartel is refusing to negotiate or share more of the massive revenue these players generate. That's why @ptpaplayers brought an antitrust suit against the ATP, WTA, and the Slams. You can learn more about this in my recent report, The Fair Play Facade: How the American Sports Economy Became a Laboratory for Corporate Power. economicliberties.us/our-work/the-f…

Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from Wimbledon after missing Roland Garros is another signal that the physical demands placed on players have reached an unsustainable level. For over two years, the PTPA has tracked injury trends across tennis using public and private data and advocated for reforms centered on player health, recovery, and long term welfare. In this recent conversation, Dr. Robby Sikka discusses many of the concerning trends emerging across professional tennis.

Black athletes have helped build college athletics into one of the most powerful and profitable industries in American life. Institutions that profit from Black talent and Black communities have a responsibility to stand with those communities when their fundamental rights are under attack. Silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality — it is complicity. Our statement unanimously opposing the SCORE Act:

Need to see the text but an SBA expansion will only make the rich richer. They’ll use it to form a super league, relegate the smaller schools to a subpar system it will be nearly impossible to get out of, and keep the spoils for themselves. Just like the system that existed before CFP.

Twenty-six of the 32 DI conference commissioners sent a letter to Sens. Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz supporting their potential Senate bill to regulate college sports. A reminder: the senators remain in negotiations and an agreement hasn’t been reached.

Yes 👇 They also have equipment manufacturers and apparel companies and pro leagues heavily invested in keeping the development pipeline flowing. The Olympic sports are just being used by the NCAA as a sacrificial lamb to get an antitrust exemption. Congress should keep that in mind as the SCORE Act once again makes its way towards a floor vote next week.
Stewart Mandel@slmandel

The whole "save college sports" movement is rooted in the myth that NIL is going to force schools to cut Olympic sports. As Arkansas found out, like Stanford and others before them, these sports all have alumni who care deeply about those programs and stepped up to fund them.
