Happy Conch Republic Independence Day!
The Conch Republic was born on April 23, 1982, when the Florida Keys city of Key West declared independence from the United States in a lighthearted protest.
The trigger was a U.S. Border Patrol roadblock on U.S. 1 that created massive traffic jams and crippled the islands’ tourism-dependent economy. Led by Mayor Dennis Wardlow, locals symbolically seceded, raised their own flag, and staged a one-minute “war” against the federal government—attacking a Coast Guard cutter with water balloons, stale Cuban bread, and conch fritters before immediately surrendering and demanding $1 billion in foreign aid.
Though never recognized as a real nation, the tongue-in-cheek move drew national attention, helped get the checkpoint removed, and turned into a beloved symbol of Keys independence and quirky pride that is still celebrated annually during Conch Republic Days.
