@Herdment1717 @madamscientist Why are we paying graduate students to work in labs you might ask? Graduate students and postdocs are the workers that make the basic science discovery that allows for the development of new treatments.

@bottwater @SSWorks Also you don’t pay payroll taxes ( social security and Medicare) when you are retired. You pay taxes to pay for the government services you depend on.

@bottwater @SSWorks Social security is not a tax because it is not revenue for the federal government. It goes into the social security trust fund. It is basically a pension. Also if you take out anything over 35k a year out of a 401k (assuming it is not a Roth) you pay taxes on that income too.
