I do wish as a culture we could stop conflating artistic or creative validity -which can grow, ebb, or recover over a lifetime- with commercial viability, which in a hyper-visual marketplace traditionally peaks at the ages when our culture finds us physically attractive.

@PiggybackCap @mfwarder @PhilippeHerndon go from owning one radio station to owning 100, it’s easier to have just one programming manager, and easier to have one playlist and assess it across markets than a hundred. And it’s easier to leverage that size to get that sweet payola, I mean advertising

@mfwarder @PhilippeHerndon @CarolineGCo Post 1996, why did that consolidation lead to only 1 playlist of mostly pop songs? Was that just the revenue maximizing strategy? Also, why is streaming bad for rock? Sorry if these are dumb questions, a lot of this was before my time and I like rock!

Eric asks some genuinely good questions here, and although I’m no longer a “professional” I do have lots of friends still in the business or adjacent - notably my best bud @PhilippeHerndon @CarolineGCo. The first thing I would say is that *songs* used to be a delivery system for solos, which were a delivery system for interest in the instrument. That was forever changed by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which lifted the ownership cap on radio and TV stations. That in turn led to Clear Channel (now iHeartRadio) to consolidate radio ownership, which in turn led to the demise of regional radio program director jobs, which were replaced by a single playlist curated by a single company catering to the least common denominator of customers. What’s the one thing “everybody” has? Children. So grunge (the last truly regional genre) was summarily replaced post-1996 with boy bands and the Spice Girls and urban R&B and ready-made pop songs which began the process of freezing out guitar-oriented rock bands. And streaming was the final nail in the coffin. I’ll let others chime in and tag in folks who can comment, but to be candid, if you really want to know the reasons why, I suspect neither you or your boss will like the answer very much.

Six Electric Guitar Oddities (from a guitar owning non-musician hobbyist): A) During the 1970s (say before Van Halen's first album) there was a raging 3 way schoolyard battle/discussion over guitar supremacy. Hendrix vs Page vs Clapton. Jeff Beck was never mentioned to the best of my recollection. Everyone knew he was there, but he was not seen as remotely in the running. Today, I don't think this group of 3 makes sense to many. Even for the period. Were we just blinded and confused? B) I see guitarists today with solos that blow my mind. Regularly. None of them have a hit song. Many don't have a band. They seem to live on Instagram. C) Jam sessions have disappeared...like nearly completely disappeared...when top tier guitar heros get together socially. Even if there are guitars everywhere in the room. The only exception I've seen seems to be if the guitarists are somehow in the nostalgia camp of folk, blues and classic rock. D) Guitars have become somewhat rare in dorm rooms. E) Almost every electric guitarist I've met comments on the aesthetics of a guitar as the most consistent and reliable thing they will evaluate. Not the action. Not the pickups. Not the fretboard. Just the looks. And in no way self-consciously. F) We have likely never had better guitarists than we have right now...and basically they follow each other and go to each others shows. But very few people who are not musicians care at all what they have to 'say' with their instruments. This is very different from the 1970s when non-musicians cared a great deal. -------------- That is the perspective of a guitar lover who is not a serious musician. I would be curious to hear from my guitar following what they think I have wildly wrong. 🙏

@mfwarder @PhilippeHerndon @EricRWeinstein seconding @mfwarder and adding this: Getting *really* good in an ensemble (not just solo wanking) takes time. Time (for multiple people) is money. TCA & Napster hoovered $ out of music. So people have to chase side hustles, promote more, and have less time.
