Traffic stops are amongst the most dangerous aspects of a police officers job. The unpredictability of other drivers on the road makes it especially hazardous for officers. On March 18th, #OttawaOPP had a vehicle stopped on #Hwy417 when this over vehicle came within a foot of striking the officer. There were no other vehicles around it, so the driver could have moved into the next lane to create space. They chose not to. Thanks to the ALPR camera, the officer was able to track down the driver at his residence and he was issued a $490 fine for Fail to move into another lane for emergency vehicle or tow truck - if safe to do. #OttTraffic ^mf

Mild temperatures, periods of heavy rain and melting snow will mean higher, faster flowing water in creeks, rivers and other local waterways. Make sure to keep children and pets away from the edge and avoid walking close to the shoreline which can be slippery or even unstable due to erosion. Be prepared for possible localized flooding. Ice conditions are extremely unpredictable and dangerous. Stay off and stay safe. ^bd

OPP officers, other first responders and tow truck operators have a dangerous workplace – at the side of the highway. Slow down, move over and proceed with caution when approaching any emergency vehicle or tow truck, stopped along the side of a road or highway, with their emergency lights flashing. If it’s not possible to change lanes, you must slow down. Failing to do so can have deadly results. It can also lead to a fine up to $2000, three demerit points and even a licence suspension. A conviction could also result in higher insurance costs. Do your part to ensure everyone’s safety. ^bd

Winter’s here and the heat is on - but let’s keep it safe. Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires in Ontario during the colder months. Whether you're using a space heater, fireplace or furnace, here’s how to stay warm without risking a fire: Keep anything that can burn (like blankets, curtains, and furniture) at least one metre away from heat sources Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. Never use your oven or stove to heat your home Have your furnace and chimney inspected annually by a professional Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and tested monthly Stay cozy, stay safe and make fire prevention part of your winter routine.

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Fire safety takes on added importance for individuals living with dementia and those who care for them. Memory loss, confusion, and difficulty with orientation can make emergencies even more dangerous - which is why planning and adapting safety measures is critical. Here are key ways to make homes safer: • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. Consider models with strobe lights or bed shaking devices. • Keep escape routes clear, well‑lit, and familiar to reduce confusion and prevent falls. • Practice escape plans often with caregivers as repetition builds confidence and reduces panic. • Choose appliances with automatic shutoff, unplug unused devices, and avoid candles or open flames. • Understand your exits and set a safe outdoor meeting spot for reassurance and accountability. • Assign a “fire buddy” so someone is always ready to guide loved ones to safety. Fire safety is about protecting the whole family including children and seniors – especially those living with dementia. When we build safe habits together, we create homes where everyone can feel secure and supported.

Happy New Year, Ontario! 🚨 As we welcome 2026, we’re sending warm wishes for a safe, healthy, and joyful year ahead. 🔥 NEW FIRE CODE REQUIREMENTS: Carbon monoxide alarms The start of a new year is the perfect time to build strong safety habits, starting with a crucial update: This year, Ontario's newly updated Fire Code requires carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every storey of your home, not just near sleeping areas. Ensure you have working CO alarms on every level of your home immediately. Don't forget to test all your smoke and CO alarms today and review your home escape plan with everyone in your household. Fire safety is more than a checklist—it’s a mindset that protects lives, property, and entire communities. Let’s carry that commitment into 2026 and continue working together to keep Ontario safe. You asked, we have answers. #CarbonMonoxide (CO) is invisible—you can’t see or smell it. Starting January 1, Ontario requires CO alarms on every floor of homes at risk of CO exposure. Ignoring the rule risks charges, fines, and lives. No CO and smoke alarms = no protection. If you’re unsure of what you need, we’ve made it simple. Everything’s at Ontario.ca/COSafety. #COSafety #COalarms

You asked, we have answers. 💬 Q: I’m a renter. Do the new 2026 carbon monoxide (CO) alarm rules apply to me? A: Yes. Landlords must install CO alarms that meet the new 2026 requirements, maintain and test them yearly, and give tenants the alarm’s maintenance instructions. Tenants also have responsibilities: • report any issues • never disable or remove the alarm (it’s against the law) CO alarms save lives—and in rentals, fire safety is a shared job. Learn what the new CO Alarm rules mean for your home at Ontario.ca/COSafety #CarbonMonoxide #COSafety #ProtectYourFamily #YouAsked #WeAnswered #GetTheFacts

The holiday season has already seen serious, even fatal collisions in eastern Ontario, in which alcohol has been a factor. The OPP has also charged numerous drivers for being impaired behind the wheel. Don't drive impaired. It can be deadly and it can change lives forever. Plan ahead. Have a designated driver, use a taxi or ride-share, take transit or stay put. Never assume you're 'good to go' after a couple of hours of sleep. Nothing but time can eliminate alcohol or drugs from your system. You could be dangerously impaired the next morning. @maddcanada @MaddOttawaArea #ONHwys #OttTraffic #DriveSafe ^bd
