English manga releases from big publishers are so odd. This volume came out in September 2025 in Japan & the series itself has ended, but don’t worry you can buy it here in the US *over* 1 year later when the hype has officially died off lol

@ethicalyaoifan wait I voted ichi before I saw Bakuman, Bakuman (outside of some unfortunate sexism) is one of my favourite manga of all time (and is especially great if you love the behind the scenes of manga creation)

@Yatoplayz It genuinely used to be a top 3 favourite manga for me, but since after the museum arc it's just been very downhill that now I rate most chapters 2/5 stars

@Yatoplayz I'd argue the best current wsj series aren't the straight battle series but stuff like Akane or Someone Hertz (I'd also put Ichi here but it's closer to a regular battle shonen)

@DesperateEri I did find some of the exterior shots overly bright but ofcourse thats me seeing it for like 2 seconds outside of the context of the actual story.

@TheCreatureHero It isnt the most unique or interesting battle shonen ever, but it does the formula pretty good. I'd say a solid 6 to perhaps even 7 out of 10

@beebslolzz Absolutely better. I would re-do TONS of faces if I had the time. Those deadlines don’t mess around, sometimes you gotta fly and let wobbly art go. Talking pages like this is where I tried to do 3-5 pages a day sometimes. It’s quite the grind!

@oblivibum It's also why I really like Ichi as a protagonist, he still has that lighthearted spark of characters like Gon but has actual clear ideology behind his actions.

Old generation of shonen fans grew up watching their main characters refuse to kill unless absolutely necessary. Now the new generation is getting kicked off by a main character who cuts down hordes of people without hesitation like a hot knife through butter

@shinhoroko I definitely believe it's some big scheme for them to make a bunch of money like some companies are trying to do with old video games and stuff.
It's just that unfortunately especially newer fans often don't really ask how their media was made

Just so we're all on the same page, the "lol" is because Speed was shown this grift purchase ahead of his triumphant clapback tweet, and in this very Instagram story, Paul explains to him that One Piece originated from a magazine, which speed was clueless to. It's a work lol.

@justBlue92DRS ichi is consistently my number 2, but akane-banashi is genuinely on a run the last few chapters that might genuinely put it in the big leagues for me. This entire arc has so far only had chapters I rated an 8 or above (which is extremely rare as I'm quite critical on that front)
