One element missing from the Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey was King Odysseus’s humorous side. In the original epic, he was not only clever and courageous, but also genuinely witty and funny. King Odysseus from Troy (2004) 👇

@CatImperator I have faith in the Croatians. They seem like competent people. I have also seen a few Latin movies and tv shows that turned out alright. Like the German show Barbarians or the movie Romulus. I am cautiously optimistic that they will at least make something fun.

@hiraethdao That's not the issue The issue is I know Croatian modern cinematography And I would hardly expect a movie in Latin that looks decent But yeah the Palace, which is quite well preserved, is must see if in Croatia and in Split

@CatImperator Diocletian lived in Croatia in what is now Split. So it makes more sense than you might think.

Another non Greek who doesn't even speak Greek, and who knows nothing about the Mediterranean sea or the Aegean or Greece, has opinions. The ship in the video is Blue Star Paros. The video is 6 years old. The ship is trying to approach Tinos island's port. The "sterile presentation" colour palette of the film is the usual colour palette of the Aegean sea, the Ionian sea, the Adriatic sea, and the Thyrrenian sea at least 6 months per year. Woods has consumed the touristified image slop of Greece and of the Mediterranean. Greece, and the Mediterranean, is nothing the touristified image slop is presented to the tourist markets. Don't be like woods.
Keith Woods@KeithWoodsYT

Look how vibrant the behind the scenes footage looks compared to the film's sterile presentation. You go from the recognisable deep blues of the Meditteranean to multiple shades of grey. Baffling.

@Variety "no Hollywood epic portraying the ancient world has ever achieved complete historical accuracy, instead reflecting the cultural assumptions and audience preferences of the time." Probably correct. That said, why one could not try to be better than predecessors?

When it comes to debates over the historical accuracy of #TheOdyssey, literature and film scholars largely agree on one point: no Hollywood epic portraying the ancient world has ever achieved complete historical accuracy, instead reflecting the cultural assumptions and audience preferences of the time. “These are fictional characters,” film critic Alonso Duralde notes in his review of “The Odyssey” on the “Breakfast All Day” podcast. “There probably wasn't actually a Helen of Troy. There probably weren’t actually a lot of these folks. And if there were, the ancient world was a lot more mixed than we think from all the Italian sword-and-sandal epics we were given in the ‘50s and ‘60s. You had people from Africa, Asia and Europe. They had boats, y’all!” Read the full report on what academics are saying about “The Odyssey”: wp.me/pc8uak-1lHy86
