I've heard many call the Patrick Williams contract extension "indefensible," and I can't let people get away with this revisionist history. Not only was it not "indefensible" at the time, it was in fact defended by the majority of Bulls-adjacent media, with reasonable arguments:

@SBN_Ricky Interesting that Billy seems to have earned the “Jerry’s honorary son” designation and not AK after Pax had that role for so long as GM. Seriously tho, Billy needs to leave. Do not hitch your wagon to the Dorfs. He seems like a competitive guy too. Just spare yourself

The Bulls won't get the best candidates for the job if they can't pick the coach. Starting this search by excluding anyone who won't stick with Billy is asinine. Mike Reinsdorf needs to hire a good GM, sign the checks, and stay out of the way. Horrible start to this GM search.

This is the worst possible answer he could have given. It's a perfect example of why the Bulls continue to be a hopeless franchise. Hire a good GM and let them pick the coach.

Reinsdorf:If we're interviewing someone and they're not sold on Billy and a Hall of Fame coach and person who has won championships in college and gone deep in playoffs in OKC and, given teams he was given, achieved good results in Chicago, then they're not right candidate for us

The Bulls enter offseason with lottery pick, potential second first-round pick depending on Portland’s play-in performance and potentially $65M of salary cap space, which could be league high. It’s a major market and ownership that doesn’t change leadership often. Attractive job.

@SBN_Ricky An immediate red flag back in 2020 was like two or three assistant GMs on their interview list turned them down before interviewing. I seem to remember candidates from the Raptors and Heat. If you’re in the pipeline to get a GM job, why tf would you work for the Reinsdorfs?

Arturas Karnisovas was deeply terrible at his job. Not sure I trust big Mike Reinsdorf to hire someone better since he's the one who hired AK, but it would honestly be hard to do worse. I can't believe they actually fired him.

@SBN_Ricky I’ve been watching the tournament not realizing until recently that Yaxel is the soon-to-be 24-year-old prospect. He’s been dominating so thoroughly, I was getting excited about him on the Bulls 😆

People ask me who I'd want for the Bulls if they pick at No. 9 or No. 10. I gave them my preferred choice in this mock.
I also have Yaxel going much higher than most projections, but I really think it can happen if the ping-pong balls bounce the right way.

From my big picture look at the Illini in January: "anything less than a Final Four berth will be considered a disappointment." They always had the talent to do this. Pretty incredible to see them put it all together.

I would argue the exact opposite. Billy has maxed out mediocre rosters for the last 6 years, adapted his system around talent, developed young players (Ayo, Coby, Matas), gotten the most out fringe All Stars (Zach, DeMar)
Last 6 years are far, far worse without Billy

Seeing all of the comments of people still giving Billy Donovan a pass after all these years is still mind boggling to me. I’ll say it again, he’s an average coach. His tenure in the NBA has been nothing but underwhelming. Billy is also accountable for the Bulls lack of success
