With deep sorrow and abiding gratitude we mourn the passing of Pope Francis, who returned to the Father’s embrace this morning. A Suffering Servant for our time, a pastor of mercy and hope whose courage opened our eyes to the virtue of building bridges, a prophet of justice, and a voice for — and sojourner to — the poor and forgotten, he reminded the Church and the world — through his actions — that “realities are greater than ideas,” and that love without borders is the heart of the Gospel. His prophetic witness to humility, compassion, and mercy, and to the integral ecology and morality inherent to God’s Creation, shaped a generation — and lifted all our eyes and hearts to heaven. His call to be “the saint next door” provides a light for us in the darkness through which we now must find our way. Pope Francis always asked for our prayers. Today, please join us in offering prayers in gratitude and love — for our beloved Papa Francisco, for all our sisters and brothers who mourn his passing, for our Church in this time of transition and hope, and for the global community that was the beneficiary of his love, hope, and wisdom. As he just wrote for his Easter homily, delivered by Cardinal Angelo Comastri: “The Jubilee invites us to renew the gift of hope within us, to surrender our sufferings and our concerns to hope, to share it with those whom we meet along our journey and to entrust to hope the future of our lives and the destiny of the human family.” @pontifex #PopeFrancis #PapaFrancisco

HEALTHCARE IS A “MORAL IMPERATIVE” 🙏 Pope Leo calls universal health care a 'moral imperative' ncronline.org/node/326486 via @NCRonline For over sixty years, the Church has proclaimed that healthcare is a human right rooted in the dignity of the human person (cf. Pacem in Terris, St. John XXIII; CCC 1908, 2288). Pope Leo has reminded us of that again, teaching that universal health coverage “cannot be a luxury for the few” but is “primarily a moral imperative for societies that wish to call themselves just. Healthcare must be accessible to the most vulnerable.” For Catholic Democrats, this means speaking clearly and courageously in the public square. We should work for healthcare for all as a public policy. At the same time, we should also affirm that the Church’s vision of healthcare is rooted in revelation and in the fullness of the Church’s moral teaching: authentic care must always serve the God-given dignity of every human life. In this moment, we are called to persuasion, not retreat—to speak with charity across our political divides, and to give witness to a politics that honors the dignity of human life. Let us pray for the grace to do this work faithfully, and for the strength to continue it. 🙏 #PopeLeo #CatholicSocialTeaching #HealthcareForAll #DignityOfHumanLife #CommonGood #Lent

FAITH, DEMOCRACY, AND A FORMED CONSCIENCE 🙏🇺🇸 Pope Leo to receive Liberty Medal from National Constitution Center on eve of US 250th ncronline.org/node/326201 via @NCRonline This will be a remarkable and historic event, and we hope it does not get distorted by the usual partisan spin from both parties about whose agenda more authentically represents Catholic Social Teaching. A brief reminder: A Catholic understanding of religious liberty cannot be reduced to either party’s favorite talking points. It includes the freedom of the Catholic Church to govern itself, the freedom of believers not to be forced into moral complicity, and the freedom of vulnerable people – including immigrants and religious minorities – to live with dignity and freedom of conscience. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, it is worth remembering that for both the American founding and our Catholic tradition, the formation of conscience is integral to our lives, the life of our nation, and the life of our Church. Conscience must be formed deliberately and carefully, protected from coercion, and lived with courage. 🇺🇸🙏 For Catholics, this is not just theory. It is part of a faith that calls us to holiness, but also forms us in the ordinary practices of Catholic life – in parishes, neighborhoods, schools, feast days, fast days, and yes, even fish fries during Lent. Faith is not a partisan accessory. It is a way of life. #ReligiousLiberty #America250 #PopeLeo #FormedConscience #FaithAndDemocracy #UnityInFaith

LENTEN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW IN FAITH — 🙏 The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, Mt 18:21–35 In this Gospel, Peter asks Jesus, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him?” Jesus replies using scriptural symbolism: “not seven times but seventy-seven times,” meaning not a fixed number, but always. Jesus then places his answer in the context of the Kingdom of heaven, giving this parable both spiritual depth and a clear moral claim on our lives. The message is unmistakable: those who seek God’s mercy must be willing to extend mercy to others. We are called to forgive not only at home and among friends, but everywhere — even in the difficult realities of public life. In today’s world, so much contempt is directed at public figures and at those with whom we disagree. But Christians are called to bring a different spirit into public life. Our relationship to our politics, our institutions, and our public witness must not be ruled by our feelings – especially those of resentment or hatred, but by our faith in service to the common good, which calls us to humility, mercy, and forgiveness. We can disagree strongly, advocate for justice, and hold leaders accountable. But the Gospel calls us to reject contempt, vengeance, and the refusal to forgive. Mercy is not weakness; it is the discipline that keeps our hearts aligned with God. Let us pray for the grace to forgive – and to help one another as sisters and brothers on this difficult journey – so that the peace and love of Christ may light our path toward Easter and beyond. 🙏 #Lent #Holiness #Forgiveness #GospelReflection #DivineMercy #FaithInPublicLife #CommonGood #UnityInForgiveness #CatholicTwitter

LENTEN OPPORTUNITY – The Revelation Story of the Samaritan Woman at the Well 🙏 In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well. He knows her life more deeply than she knows herself—her wounds, her history, and her thirst. He knows that in her heart, she has been waiting for him, the Christ, and he offers her living water. Her encounter with Jesus changes everything. She is no longer hiding. She returns to her village and bears witness to the one who truly sees her. This is an important lesson for Lent—and for anyone seeking to help heal our society. If we want to change the world collectively, we must first allow Christ to change us personally. Before action, there must be conversion. 🙏 Before witness, there must be surrender. 🙏 Before we can help build a more just society, we must orient our own hearts toward God. 🙏 Christ calls us to orient our lives toward him, the source of truth and living water. When we allow that grace to transform us, we begin to see others differently—and our communities can begin to heal. Let us pray that this Lent we truly drink the living water Christ offers us, surrendering ourselves to his truth, so that both our lives and our society may grow in truth, love, justice, and unity for the greater glory of God. 🙏 #Lent #LivingWater #Holiness #UnityInTruth #DivineMercy

LENTEN CHALLENGES – The Prodigal Son 🙏 No matter where we are on our journey, and no matter the challenges that may hinder us from growing closer to God, our Heavenly Father is always there to meet us with open arms and a heart full of love. As in the Gospel of the Prodigal Son, God never stops waiting for us, never stops watching for our return, and never stops rejoicing when we come home. Let us give thanks that we share a Heavenly Father of such love and mercy. And let us pray that, amid the darkness of this wounded world, we may learn to show that same mercy to those who need it most. Our world needs that light. 🙏 #Lent #ProdigalSon #DivineMercy #Holiness #CatholicTwitter #UnityInMercy

PRAYER ALERT 🙏 The psalmist exhorted, “When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them” (Psalm 34:17). From the distress that darkens our world, please join Pope Leo, the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, Catholic Democrats and all people of good will in praying for disarmament and peace. Let us pray. 🙏 POPE’S PRAYER INTENTION FOR DISARMAMENT AND PEACE - March 2026 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amén. Lord of Life, you shaped every human being in your image and likeness. We believe you created us for communion, not for war, for fraternity, not for destruction. You who greeted your disciples saying, “Peace be with you,” grant us the gift of your peace and the strength to make it a reality in history. Today we lift up our prayer for peace in the world, asking that nations renounce weapons and choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy. Disarm our hearts of hatred, resentment, and indifference, so we may become instruments of reconciliation. Help us understand that true security does not come from control fueled by fear, but from trust, justice, and solidarity among peoples. Lord, enlighten the leaders of the nations, so they may have the courage to abandon projects of death, halt the arms race, and place the lives of the most vulnerable at the center. May the nuclear threat never again dictate the future of humanity. Holy Spirit, make us faithful and creative builders of daily peace: in our hearts, our families, our communities, and our cities. May every kind word, every gesture of reconciliation, and every choice for dialogue be seeds of a new world. Amen. #Lent #PopeLeo #PrayForPeace #UnityInPeace

LENTEN GOSPEL CHALLENGES 🙏 The Gospel reading for the Monday of the Second Week of Lent could not be more important for an angry, tribalized society. "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven." Lk 6:36-36 Being merciful is not easy – but we can’t give up on it. In our experience, the more we practice mercy, however imperfectly, the easier and the better we do it. And we're also reminded that we're more likely to be merciful when we strive to see the world with humility and charity. Let us grow in our lived testimony to God’s mercy for us. Let us pray. 🙏 #Holiness #UnityInChrist #LordHaveMercy #ChristHaveMercy #OurFather

Gospel of the Day (Luke 6,36-38) Jesus said to his disciples: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." vaticannews.va/en/word-of-the…

Sunday’s second reading offered some sobering challenges for us: holiness and not our design or desires, but God’s. If that feels overwhelming, the way the Transfiguration overwhelmed Peter, James, and John, perhaps we can meet the call where we are on our journey. If holiness seems like a bridge too far, what about striving to be the “saint next door,” as Pope Francis described? From there, we may find the courage to examine the places where our own designs pull us from God’s – especially where political loyalty pressures us to put party before faith. In Christ, we can choose integrity and holiness over “winning,” even when it costs us. Let us pray. 🙏 #Lent #Holiness #UnityInChrist #FaithBeforePolitics

Tonight the nation watches Washington – the #StateOfTheUnionAddress. But the #HolyFather is watching our hearts. Pope Leo calls us this Lent to "disarm our language" – especially "in political debates" and "on social media." 🙏 So, we remind our sisters and brothers on the Left and Right who may be tempted to arm themselves for tonight's State of the Union of today's Gospel. In it Christ teaches his disciples how to pray by reciting what we now call the "Our Father" (Mt 6:9-13). He then adds: "If you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions." (Mt 6:14-15) The Holy Father reminds us that "words of hatred" must "give way to words of hope and peace." Tonight, may we begin by disarming our own hearts. 🙏 Please join us in praying the Our Father – that we may learn to forgive as we ask God to forgive us. Let us pray. 🙏 #SOTU #SOTU2026 #Holiness #Mercy #UnityInFaith #Forgiveness #OurFather #Lent2026

Ambassadors for Christ 🙏 Yesterday Paul re-commissioned us as “ambassadors for Christ,” as he does every year at this time. Lent calls us inward – to prayer, reflection, repentance, and conversion. This year, #PopeLeo presses further. Conversion is never only personal. It is also public. So, as ambassadors, we do not serve only in private. In his Lenten message, he urges us to disarm our language in our families, our communities, and even in our public debates. In his homily, he calls us to repentance not only of our individual hearts, but of social structures and institutions in which sin has become embedded. We have been recruited, once again, to serve in Christ’s diplomatic corps. Our charge is to reconcile ourselves –and help reconcile our sisters and brothers – to God. Leo suggests that our method can be found in the footsteps of “the ancient and contemporary martyrs… the admirable witnesses to the faith.” If that sounds like an overreaching expectation, then perhaps we can think of our holiness more in line with what #PopeFrancis described as the holiness of “the saint next door.” Mindful that Jesus walks in the desert for us, let us pray that we may accompany one another in solidarity as we seek to build the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. 🙏 #Lent #Lent2026 #AshWednesday #AmbassadorsForChrist #LentenJourney #LentenConversion #Holiness #UnityInChrist

We begin our Lenten journey today. 🙏 Some of us are more experienced in what this season asks of us than others. But no matter where we are spiritually, we all begin with three things in common: We are children of God. We are sinners. We must take the same first step. Let us take that step together as sisters and brothers in Christ, with the intention to grow closer to God this Lent and, in doing so, closer to one another. Let us pray that we may embrace this Lenten journey as the blessing it is. 🙏 #AshWednesday #Lent #Lent2026 #RepentAndBelieve #PrayFastGiveAlms #CatholicSocialTeaching #UnityInChrist

PRESIDENT’S DAY: THE MORAL WITNESS OF IMPERFECT TRUTH AND VIRTUE SEEKING THE COMMON GOOD 🙏 George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were not saints. Both bore grave moral failures – especially regarding slavery. Naming that truth matters. But history is not an either/or. We can judge sin honestly without erasing the virtues that still form our national conscience. What ultimately links Washington and Lincoln is not perfection, but a striving toward truth, shaped by developing virtue – “I cannot tell a lie,” and “Honest Abe.” Not political truth as our culture defines it today, but moral truth: truth about dignity, conscience, and the common good. For Catholics, truth is not partisan or optional. God is truth and love. And Christ tells us plainly: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” In a tribalized age, faith does not offer a party platform – it offers a moral horizon against which every platform must be judged. This President’s Day, we recommit ourselves – or commit for the first time – to truth within our faith and truth within the public square. Not perfection, but faithfulness. Not tribal loyalty, but formed conscience. Join us in this work. Let us pray – and then act. 🙏 #PresidentsDay #UnityInTruth #ImperfectVirtue #CommonGood #CatholicSocialTeaching #CatholicTwitter

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY: LOVE, FAITH, AND POLITICS Today we celebrate #StValentine – a 3rd-century priest who gave his life for Christ and bore witness to a love stronger than fear. In a time of persecution and division, he chose courage over comfort and faithfulness over compromise. For Catholics, love is not merely romance or sentiment. It is #agape – self-giving love that defends #HumanDignity, stands with the vulnerable, and seeks the #CommonGood. St. Augustine taught that the moral life depends on the right ordering of our loves. When our political loyalties outrank our love for truth and human dignity, something has gone wrong. On this feast of St. Valentine, let us pray for the grace to rightly order our loves – so that our faith forms our politics, and not the other way around. 🙏 Love is not passive. Love is action – steadfast, sacrificial, and rooted in Christ – especially when it carries personal or political cost. #ValentinesDay #Holiness #UnityInFaith #FaithInPublicLife #AgapeLove #CatholicSocialTeaching #MoralCourage

ACCOUNTABILITY AND MERCY 🙏 We thank @CardinalBCupich and @DetArchbishop Weisenburger for their necessary prudential statements holding #PresidentTrump accountable for the racist meme posted to his social media account and for his refusal to apologize. As Catholics: We affirm that racism in any form is morally unacceptable and must be named, condemned, and repented of. We can – and must – call our leaders to account when their actions wound #HumanDignity. An attack on our Black sisters and brothers is an attack on our entire human family. At the same time, we refuse the temptation to respond with bitterness, contempt, or hatred. 🙏 We pray for #DonaldTrump – not despite this controversy, but because of it. As @POTUS, his words and actions carry grave moral weight. His lack of moral clarity and openness to grace harms the #CommonGood of both our nation and the global community. 🙏 #EndRacism #RacismIsASin #CatholicSocialTeaching #MoralLeadership #AccountabilityAndMercy #JusticeWithMercy #UnityInFaith #UnityInHope #UnityInPrayer
