Clustering model parameters across hundreds of synapses, we found five functional subtypes of synaptic dynamics in rodents and six functional subtypes in humans which show qualitative overlap (though based on existing data we don’t expect a perfect overlap). 4/10

I’m pretty overdue but this photo reminds me of this exciting day when I had a chance to moderate the trainee talks along with @CayaBissonnette at Centre for Neural Dynamics Research Spotlight organized by @uOttawaBMRI, & enjoy a beautiful talk by @nspruston back in September!

A new theory of serotonin function: it encodes "cumulative future reward" aka state value biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Compared to dopamine, serotonin is a lot more mysterious

@argalloni @NeuroNaud It is possible that IP3Rs bypass the requirement for an additional molecular marker. IP3Rs require calcium and IP3 to open, which may be triggered by two independent sources. The exclusivity of this may depend on location and kinetics of calcium and IP3.

@argalloni @NeuroNaud Great question! We have been giving some thoughts to this as well. Indeed, there might a be molecular marker that requires both pre- and postsynaptic activity, and that interacts with ER release, for LTP induction. We have not experimentally tested this.

@CayaBissonnette @NeuroNaud Do you think something might still be categorically different between the two types of Ca source, e.g. maybe synapse activation triggers CaMKII and burst doesn't?

@NeuroNaud Very interesting paper, thanks for sharing! So cool that you are also venturing into the molecular world and building a bridge to the circuit level.
