@DavidDidau That’s interesting as when I was last observed the person watching said they struggled to find something to improve (I had lots of suggestions) and that they had made notes mainly for their own teaching.

@ShakinthatChalk Or they could just take in their favourite and talk to the other students about why they like it….

This. I effing hate world book day with all the nonsense trying to dress as someone. My boys just got black stuff on because ninja or something I couldn’t care less.
Jenn Knussen 💜@JKnussen

Schools.. why not do "Dress as an adjective"for #WorldBookDay ? Sporty, Spotty, Casual, Comfy, etc. Saves parents a fortune on costumes. Massive learning and discussion potential. Children get to guess which adjective their peers are dressed as. You're welcome ❤️

@ShakinthatChalk I think they should do it for Chen and bio too. There are a few equations needed for bio and chem they don’t get given them and never have.

@sciantificnew I think they should remove the requirement for the equations in biology and chemistry too.

To those arguing that removing the expectation to memorise physics equations is ‘lowering expectations’. When did you last read the specification for triple science? The Edexcel GCSE Triple Science specification is over 200 pages long in total. Best you get reading!👍😉

@adamboxer1 Do you think it applies to all sciences or just physics as for Biology there are a few equations they need to memorise still as they don’t get a formula sheet.

I'm fine with government not requiring equation memorisation but I'd prefer it if they criminalised formula triangles Much bigger fish that needs frying

@SciInTheMaking I don't think that's always or necessarily true. Some skills are tied to content knowledge, but not all.

High-order thinking depends on a strong foundation of knowledge. Without this foundation, there’s nothing to critically think about. That is why teaching “21st century skills” and “critical thinking” in isolation does not work. Let me explain with an analogy ⬇️

Only two people assigned for the entire curriculum draft for English. That's the entirety of reading and writing. Two people. 1 in 6 adults in this country are functionally illiterate and we've got two people on it. I'm sure they are very skilled, but is this the best we can do?

@musicteachinguk @adamboxer1 @Mr_Raichura It’s not just your school. My classroom is on the same corridor as the KS4 office. Every lesson there are kids outside and not in lessons. I have one class and every lesson someone is truanting. (They do this across many lessons). My yr 12s found focus tricky as chaos outside.

@adamboxer1 @Mr_Raichura Sorry for the rant. I don't know if you would ever address internal truancy on the podcast, it seems to have got much worse over the years (not just since COVID), but then again it could be that I notice it more. Either way I get so angry about it, such a waste of everyone's time

@adamboxer1 interested in the work you do as you travel around. Do you ever see internal truancy at high P8 schools?

@jallcock01 @helzdonnelly We do the same as above similar numbers. Again extra set in year 11 as well. Specialists from year ten. Mixed comp in a grammar school area so all the top kids go to the grammars.

Please can this be shared. For your 11-16 cohort… How many science teachers do you have? What disciplines are represented? How many students in a class? (We have 30-35 at KS3, 13-33 at KS4) Do you teach KS4 by specialism? Thanks!

@joel120193 Yes we do. I was very amused when one was brought into a cover lesson where the kids had cover work and I just supervised them doing it. In any case the child at home did not even switch the robot on…..never had one in a lesson for one of my own classes.

Does anyone have these AV1 robots in their school? They essentially are a camera in your lesson where a pupil streams from home. Personally, I would flat out refuse to have this in my classroom but I'm curious...

@NotFor_turning @cerysturner7 Those holiday weeks are counted as weeks in your maternity pay and you cannot add on holidays to your maternity like other occupations can to extend it with pay. So you don’t get those weeks paid. So not sure how having that makes maternity pay better.

There's a reason we don't teach "discovery-based swimming." We understand the risks outweigh the reward. That we abide it in schools suggests that we really don't think the stakes are very high. (h/t: @rastokke ) bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

@MmeLockhartLDS @tombennett71 I totally agree and hopefully if the UK government remove some of the content to be taught this would give us the time to fit in all the above. At the moment it is impossible to do all that for every topic and cover the specification.

For clarity, the bigger expectation of enrichment activities will come with funding to pay staff to deliver them or is the expectation that these will just happen with unpaid overtime?

@BiologyWalker @MissBird90 Interesting we have a two week timetable. We have 9 lessons across two weeks for combined so one less than you but we have 14 lessons across two weeks for separate. So two extra. We still struggle to teach it all. We do Edexcel.

@Cazalineuk @MissBird90 If you wanna know how that fits with everything else: 4 x Maths 5 x English 5 x Science 2 x P.E. 2 x Option 1 2 x Option 2 2 x Option 3 2 x R.S. 1 x P.S.E. Or 6:1 science:PE for separates
