the word 'community' originated from the latin word 'communis' which literally means; 'shared by all' 'held in common' or 'together' long before we had discord servers, tg groups, or dao(s)… the romans used it to describe shared farmlands, tools, duties, shared risks and responsibilities. this idea was so strong that communis wasn’t about friendship or belonging then; it was about mutual dependency. if two people farmed the same land or hunted together, they were described as acting communiter; in common. you survived because something was shared. later, medieval latin formed communitas, referring to groups bound by shared obligations, especially in towns and monasteries. that passed into old french as communité, then into english as community. even after all the revolution, the core meaning never changed; shared survival → shared obligation → shared identity → shared space → shared purpose today, we don't gather around fire pits or shared farms, neither do we hunt together. we gather around missions,ideas and meaning we don’t share land anymore; we share narratives. we don’t share tools; we share incentives. we don’t share dangers; we share conviction. but the pattern hasn’t changed since communis. a community is still a group of people depending on each other for something bigger than themselves. not just a chatroom not just activities, but a shared stake a common future that’s why the strongest communities don’t feel like audiences… they feel like tribes. loyalists. cults! confraternities!
