Like any other service CB has impact on the Battery life of a Mobile device however it is very small and generally lower than 1 second on the average handset battery life duration (1440 minutes). It is surprising how little mobile operators currently know on the developments in Cell Broadcast for public warning in the last 10 years. 4G, 5G, Device Based Geo Fencing, native CB client for public warning channels it is all available and proven.

@CellAlert Now if only the German authorities would finally understand that the ~30 years old Cell Broadcast technology is something they could finally adopt for desaster notifications. It's the only thing that scales, SMS, App or other non-broadcast can *never* scale.

@EpicChefUK @LordTobySays Correct, I never look at my SMS messages, it is always WhatsApp. And from Cell broadcast message you cannot escape, you cannot turn it off if the Government is using the 4370 non opt-out channel (also called sometimes presidential alert) !

@LordTobySays In terms of cell-broadcast vs. location-based SMS, just consider that most people have now moved to using WhatsApp etc. and may have turned off their SMS notifications. Almost all handsets will deliver a Cell Broadcast text marked as "EMERGENCY ALERT" with a specific loud sound.

Other countries have used emergency alerting schemes for years, but the UK Government has shilly shallyed and bickered about which Department should be in charge since 2013. #covid19 #emergency theguardian.com/world/2020/mar…

@AndrewOrlowski Maybe @pubdaddy can help with that or @PedroClarke1. Back in the days I was working on early GSM tech the purpose of Cell Broadcast was to share information in an emergency or even localised weather. It never really materialised in the UK...

In future, UK government should fund mandatory implementation of Wireless Emergency Alerts system across all UK networks. A text message is better than nothing, but at even at 1000 msgs/second its takes forever to hit 85 million mobiles in the UK. (BBC piece includes my comments)

Das Problem bei der Implementierung eines gut funktionierenden modernen öffentlichen Warnsystems in Deutschland besteht darin, dass die von den Regierungen eingesetzten "Experten" (Fraunhofer) eine eigene App (Katwarn) haben, sodass Cell Broadcast niemals empfohlen wird.
