3 Ribeye at $99 is bad jujus, and I bet the rancher does not see that. The chain from rancher to inspector/sale barn to feedlot to processor to grocer and those input costs as @cattleguy92 highlighted in a 5 year agricultural recession with govt-debt inflated money is the problem. I sell direct at $5/lb hanging weight at 1/4, 1/2, & Full steer rated at prime. Direct (“farm to table”) means straight to butcher, which means those 3 ribeyes should cost no more than $20-$30.

I mean diesel is $5/ gal. 4 gal of diesel doesn’t go far when you’re trying to manage a cattle herd and get calves from birth to a plate! That’s just one cost. Believe me there’s many more. Don’t ever try to figure labor!! Or worse, potential income from labor you could make if not raising cattle! It’s not as cut and dried as saying beef is too high! What’s a latte now at Starbucks? What’s the price comparison of the nutritional value?!

Somewhere around 60% of the ranchers will be culling herds, and the best grazing lands in our area are being replaced with subdivisions—homes built literally 2 ft from each other where water wells can support animals but not thousands of overpriced/oversized homes.

We do 1/4, 1/2, Full steers and sell at $5/lb hanging wt, which includes your ribeyes, filets, sirloins, all cuts. Any savings we pass on to the customer (went to $4.50/lb on our last 3 steers due to good pasture management and rains). Our athletes and medical professionals say they feel the beef restore soon after eating post workout. There are good operators that are farm-to-table like us in your region. Average family of 4 according to USDA eats 1/4 to 1/2 steer per year to plan your budget/fridge needs. Bones and organs are free, and we highly recommend them for soups and your dogs as there is a lot meat on them.
