Blizzard’s “sexual harassment” scandal was an exaggerated justification for a coup against the lead creatives and executives who had maintained Blizzard’s values and standards. Prior to those events, it was the most desirable employer in the games industry and every single product it released was an exemplar of quality. But Bobby Kotick wanted an excuse to exercise more control over those franchises and a cadre of disaffected female workers felt the culture, where men drank together in the office after hours while playing games or working, was a “boys’ club.” A few isolated sexual harassment allegations during the height of MeToo was enough justification to tear it all down. Men with decades of experience at Blizzard who were responsible for classic and beloved games were fired and disgraced for being on email chains where employees joked about hooking up with fans at Blizzcon events. Their names were scrubbed from the games they made. Their friends, like Jeff Kaplan, who dodged allegations were either pushed out by Kotick’s new management or saw the writing on the wall and found their exits. The Blizzard that people loved no longer exists.

Then there is Anduin, Thrall, Lor’themar, Turalyon, Arator, Velen, Magni, etc. Seems like it’s still mostly dudes. Not sure what the d4 character issue is.

Aside from just awesome gameplay and a good story, the main achievement of Starcraft in the classic RTS era was the asymmetry. In Age of Empires and Warcraft the different playable factions were mostly identical. Starcraft had 3 totally different factions - everything from the unit roster to the art to the tech tree was different. Command and Conquer Generals was similar. Now, asymmetry is pretty common in the gaming world. Starcraft set a new standard.

Mayor Mamdani stood in front of the Citizens Budget Commission last night — a room full of people who oppose taxing the wealthy — and said it anyway. Tax the ultra-rich. End the state’s drain on the city. Make those with the most do more for those with the least. He didn’t soften it for the audience. Here’s the reality he was describing: Trump’s federal cuts are gutting healthcare, food assistance, housing, and transit. That need doesn’t disappear. The bill just gets pushed down onto working people — while the Epstein class collects an enormous tax handout from the same administration. Cities like New York are being forced to absorb the cost of a federal government that is actively looting the country. Mamdani is calling it what it is. In rooms that don’t want to hear it. That’s what real leadership looks like.
