The prime minister’s survival is probably now in the hands of his former deputy, Angela Rayner. Now that she has been absolved of wrongdoing by HMRC, his get-out-of-jail is to offer her the health job vacated by Streeting or perhaps any job she wants. She is strong enough to dictate terms, because she represents a large part of the parliamentary Labour Party that wants him out. So if she throws him a lifeline, they may too. I am imagining the conversation in which Rayner says to the PM that she fancies being Chancellor of the Exchequer and she is sure Rachel Reeves would excel as health secretary. This is currently all the stuff of fiction, except that whether Rayner agrees to take any job from Starmer is potentially life or death for him

An underpriced result of any leadership contest is that Starmer actually wins it, which means Labour are effectively stuck with him for the next general election, which would be catastrophic for them.

I’m yet to find a Labour MP who thinks electing Ed Miliband to take on Nigel Farage would make any sense whatsoever. Most think Miliband doesn’t even want the job. Yet it’s now a real possibility.

Wes Streeting’s team is asking MPs to support his leadership bid to trigger a contest, but arguing that they can transfer their vote to another candidate after a race begins. Suggests the Streeting team is struggling to get to 81 nominations tonight.

One key thing which is a bit under priced - Should Starmer decide to run against Streeting – plus an alternative candidate from the left like Rayner or Miliband – the prime minister would have a major advantage because of Labour’s voting system, which is preferential voting.

Another PM consumed by the Westminster meat grinder. Given the same fate has befallen leaders of both parties, we may have to consider a more unpalatable truth - the economy’s issues are currently too deep seated for one government to fix - but it suits to pretend otherwise.

Starmer’s incapacities are obvious. However he has a mandate. As soon as he is replaced in however an ‘orderly fashion’ British media bias will become deadly. One rule on lack of mandates for the right: another for the left. The cabinet must plan skilfully; it could get worse.
