Frankly, the pettiness and extremism on display here say a lot about the current state of American society. Americans are so low these days. LOW.LOW.LOW. Even more telling is the U.S. media’s decision to prop up another Chinese-American athlete as a counterpoint to Gu. It’s a clumsy move—both athletes have the right, under the rules, to choose the country they wish to represent. That’s a matter of personal freedom. But one thing is certain: Gu’s commercial value in China will far exceed that of her U.S.-based counterpart—by a factor of ten, at least. In a way, competing for China might actually encourage Gu to lead a healthier life. Any scandal involving drugs or promiscuity could severely damage her commercial prospects in China, and that accountability serves as a form of positive discipline. As for that American athlete, honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up on OnlyFans someday. One final advice: Gu should probably think twice about returning to Stanford anytime soon. The current social climate in the U.S. is alarmingly extreme, and the hostility directed at her feels less like political disagreement and more like a potential threat to her personal safety.
