Nigeria - Coffee Wasikye Alfred Today morning I had a very interesting conversation with Alfred Wasikye about his coffee export business whose X handle is @ChanzoCoffee. Am also curious how things work, we discussed the challenges and opportunities for Ugandans. He has been exporting coffee to UAE, South Korea, Germany , United Kingdom , the USA , Qatar etc But he said, Nigeria is actually a better market willing to pay higher prices, this last weekend he sent 1700kgs on @UG_Airlines and yes, he paid close usd 4k for transport. I was happy he atleast transported his coffee on an Ugandan national carrier which means money stays in uganda. I then called someone in @UG_Airlines to discuss about the potential Nigeria has for Ugandans and I was like why aren’t guys talking about this? I was shocked we are sending milk, tomatoes, chillies, avocados and I was told we scratching the surface when it comes to opportunities in Nigeria. Africa trades itself only 16% and remaining 84% is with other continents and it’s mainly one way. Us buying products from the west at higher prices. Nigeria for example imports milk from the likes of France over 600m dollars worth, Ghana over usd 200m annually and we have milk here. Governments will always be a problem not only in uganda but we must wake up and push for opportunities regardless of the challenges. Angola for example imports coffee from Portugal and I am happy to make introduction for @ChanzoCoffee, Angola has the money. They realized that oil money can’t easily trickle down to the population plus they can’t just distribute money, they have turned to invest in tourism which they call green oil. Tourism has a massive trickle down effects and can easily remove from poverty those who are determined to work hard not talk hard.

@wekesa_amos The opportunities with markets such as Nigeria and Angola, especially as it pertains to value-added goods like coffee, are significant and worth deeper engagement.
