According to this map, @Walmart doesn't do business in Europe except for small e-commerce stuff. I am really surprised 😮

Single currency has been a disaster for Eurozone. This is basic economics, you cannot have countries with different rates of inflation, wage growth & an exchange rate unable to adjust, why you think PIIGS countries jobless rate so high? As they're not competitive. If EU wants to restore growth, competitiveness Europe has to go full Federalist (undemocratic) or break up & return to sovereign currencies, the problem with currency union before political union is same as if you put cart before the horse, the longer EU persists with halfway house the more it costs its citizens

When i want to discuss work & pay etc, I will always get shut down by someone screaming about exploitation. Have they ever thought of the exploitation of a woman having to sleep with a man just to buy 2.5kg mielie meal to feed her kids because she can’t get a job???

@FinanceGhost WMT unlikely imo. They burned their fingers badly with Massmart. I can't see them buying into another struggling retailer here Also MSM was basically the same concept as WMT. PIK is a bit different Unlocking value with PIK isn't easy. I don't know how they turn the ship

Pick n Pay originally bought Boxer for around R185 million. The base cost is practically negligible. Take the CGT and a marketability discount off that Boxer stake and the gap is mostly gone. The catalysts for an unlock are (1) tax efficient unbundling or (2) PIK is acquired. Will they unbundle the golden goose? Probably not. Will an acquirer take the entire group out? Maybe. Walmart etc. would surely be on the list of obvious acquirers. How much will they pay? And do they do it at PIK level, or make the offer at BOX level and get the asset they really want? Maybe there's value there. But I remain very unconvinced that it will be a great outcome for investors.

@keithmclachlan Do you believe they are going to do that ? Or will they simply sell BOX shares periodically to pay for the PNP disaster show? Instinctively or logically one feels that PNP should be worth something (not negative) but practically speaking is it? How do they compete with SHP?

@mommy_moneyza @JustXavierB I get the impression people don't even know what a CEO is. They think it's like a position which just comes with a set salary of R20m I can be CEO of my flea market stall but that doesn't mean I just get a R5m package!

@JustXavierB They are just in charge of regulations. They don’t have revenue to grow & risks to deal with like other companies. Its actually generous

@FinanceGhost Podcast worth discussion Oil is the one commodity that has been kept pretty low for years. Theoretically it hasnt kept up with many other commodities We have designed a world that doesnt currently work well with $100 oil but in truth it should trade higher with inflation

@Chapter11Wealth There was some good disclosure from Alphamin recently as well. I think it depends very much on the mining house itself. But it's also the derived inflationary impact (i.e. non-oil products) that will play a role. The world just doesn't work at $100/barrel.

Such great disclosure here by Gold Fields that it deserves to be reproduced in full. Here's what the real-world inflation risk looks like right now... Note: impact of $40/oz to $50/oz on gold if oil stays around $100/barrel. Interest rates ain't dropping anytime soon.

@FinanceGhost I personally think costs and AISCs are gonna go up DRAMATICALLY At least 10% (very conservative) But easily north of 20% for some miners

@Chapter11Wealth Inflation is usually low single digits without oil. So oil alone being responsible for 3% (in this particular example) is very material to inflation as whole.

@FinanceGhost Ive always assumed energy costs are a much higher percentage of input cost to gold miners. Between 25 to 50% depending on how one looks at it.

@mommy_moneyza Capitalism will always result in wealth disparity. You will have very rich and very poor people. You will however have a higher average and better services for all! Communism just makes everyone equally poor Capitalism is the best of all the bad systems we have

Since 2000 (ending 2025), there's been only 30 countries and 39 instances with inflation >10% for 5 years in a row. During the same period, there's only 8 countries in the whole world to experience >20% for 5 years in a row. Here's the Champions League of high inflation:

Tell them you want to close your account and can they help you? I get these cold calls all the time to sign up to things. The moment I mention closing or cancelling a contract they go quiet, say I need to jump through 100 hoops and phone another number
Peter Armitage@peterarmitage

I am getting around 5 spam calls a day from Standard Bank and Liberty Life. The same numbers, again and again. Do people really transact based on these calls? How do I make it stop?
