Cape Town International Airport is getting a R11.3 billion upgrade💰 Once complete, the airport will be able to handle larger planes and free up space for future terminal expansion. The runway will be extended to 3 500m x 60m and rotated by 11.5 degrees to improve air-traffic efficiency, at a cost of R6.4 billion. Other planned upgrades include: • R2.7 billion for the domestic arrivals terminal • R500 million to expand departures • R853 million for the international terminal • R513 million for a new perimeter fence ACSA announced this as part of a broader R21.7 billion upgrade programme across South African airports, with the first construction tender expected in June and contractor appointment by year-end. Some phases will run through to around 2030. Cape Town International handled 11.1 million passengers in 2025, so the expansion is not surprising. Between rising tourism numbers and the planned Cape Winelands Airport, there is finally some pressure for them to level up. Pity the renders look like they were made on Microsoft Paint😅 Let’s hope the finished product looks better than the presentation.
