The #SVB failure exposes thousands of software companies to missed payroll payments on 3/15. These companies had the money to make payroll on Friday, but if they didn't get those funds out of SVB they are now frozen while the FDIC sorts out what to do. Th…lnkd.in/e86_TK9N

To get a good sense of ChatGPT's strengths and weaknesses, ask it to prove that there's no greatest prime number. It doesn't scour the internet for a proof to regurgitate (@david_colquhoun), which I assume wouldn’t be that hard for a machine to do. Instead it . . . 1/4

Does the hard problem of consciousness simply dissolve when you start to think about it as a relativistic phenomenon? To me, it's a description not an explanation. neurosciencenews.com/physics-consci…

The autocrats are winning not because the story they are telling is true, but because they are telling a story and we are not. Liberalism is neither self-evident nor self-executing; it needs a good story to move people to fight for it. davidestorey.com/2022/05/18/dao…

A gentle reminder to stop misusing "begs the question." I will leave this here for anyone who needs it.

@stephen_richer Why did you pick an a priori truth (2+2=x) as the thing to demonstrate falsifiability? #Philosophy
Can't disagree with you about the voting tho ;)
English

@philosophybites @philosophybites do you think you can salvage the statement by trading on a difference in the meaning of 'understanding' as opposed to 'knowing'? Perhaps God can be omniscient without needing understanding? If you construe understanding as a human construct of the intellect.

Maybe Hamlet would agree, but sometimes knowing a great deal makes it much easier to make a decision (eg whether to take homeopathy seriously...the more you know about the science the less difficult it is to decide it’s a bad thing).

'The less you understand the world, the easier it is to make a decision'. Superb salutary aphorism from @nntaleb for those involved in education. Have a good week!

There's something poetic about @TomBrady, the greatest Patriot there ever was, ending his career as a Buccaneer. It just about says what you need to know about #America. Patriots & pirates go hand-in-hand right back to the beginning. #TeaParty #DontTreadOnMe @Patriots @Buccaneers

@DavidEStorey @seanilling Modern media-cycle-crazed jorunalism is about a quarter inch deep. A provocative title evokes the whole story and makes it easy to pick a side of the debate, so why even bother to think critically about what the author's intent was?
English

@seanilling Yes! Ironically Fukuyama’s text is a great predictor for the rise of Trump. Everyone ignores the Nietzschean subtitle, which is the warning—that the end of history sows nihilism that threatens the resurgence of the desire for “greatness”
English

The case that Fukuyama's book is the least understood and most referenced in modern history gets stronger every day

We need a complete and total ban on Gawker alums mentioning Fukuyama until we can figure out what the hell is going on.
