What’s going on here with this great swing by Micheál Martin is these Trump press conferences have passed a domestic toxicity point where it’s now more in the European leader’s interest to be seen to challenge Trump than it to be seen to have been an uninterrupted success.
The Bulwark@BulwarkOnline

Irish PM Micheál Martin: "Europe is still a very good place to live…Our economy is going well because we're attracting a lot of people from Europe and beyond to work legally…I think sometimes Europe gets characterized wrongly in terms of it being overrun."

British PM Keir Starmer knows the war in Iran could sink his number one domestic mission: Cutting the cost of living. But unfortunately for him, Donald Trump seems not to be in a hurry. politico.eu/article/uk-kei…

The Trump administration believes it can withstand a brief spike in oil prices before the political hit does lasting damage. They have 3-4 weeks “where they can ride out what they need to," one source close to the White House told us. politico.com/news/2026/03/1…

@AlexPanton1 @kateferguson4 You're right. I'm not saying petrol prices are not important. I slightly regret the tweet to be honest; it was a quick thought about how UK is a much smaller global power than in past global crises - but I fear it's given impression I think cost of living pressures don't matter

Mad take. Rise in the cost of fuel a key indicator of social and political unrest across countries over the years. Politicians who don’t respond to this are destined to fail as politicians. It’s not British smallness. It’s a universal truth of politics.

No starker illustration of Britain's geopolitical smallness than the first question at PMQs, at this moment in history, being about fuel duty A domestic cost of living question about a commodity, the global price of which we have no means to control

@kateferguson4 True. I suppose I'm taking the long view! Although we were a price-maker rather than a price-taker on gas, at least, until fairly recently. Anyway I hope all well with you!
