This is a great piece, not just on Andy Burnham’s strengths and frailties but on the strange nature of the metro mayor job — a bigger profile with fewer responsibilities; it just makes it so much easier to be popular

I’ve been writing about Andy Burnham in Manchester for a while. We’ve had a few run-ins but I think he has qualities that many people don’t appreciate and weaknesses that spell trouble. I wrote this for @ManchesterMill - I hope it’s insightful and fair. manchestermill.co.uk/stop-looking-f…

🚨 BURNHAM MEDIA HUDDLE - Suggests social care should be on NHS via a specific "social care levy" - Supports "thrust" of Mahmood migration changes but clearly skeptical of ILR changes - Won't say if Starmer would be a hindrance in campaign. Repeats need for Labour 'change'

🚀 Rachel Reeves’ allies are warning she must not be “torpedoed” by Keir Starmer’s sinking ship 😬And from spooking the bond markets to damaging relations with business and going OTT on net zero, they’re taking aim at possible successor Ed Miliband

@tomhfh I’m not certain how the policy works at the business/tax calculation end, but on the employee end- fwiw my old paper reimbursed me at whatever the govt figure was at the time. So to raise that would suggest firms will be reimbursing more expenses to their employees

@danbloom1 Ah, tax. Wondered if this was some central diktat for what businesses themselves would reimburse staff for travel.

EXCL: Playbook hears that Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a rise in mileage rates today — i.e. the 45p a mile that employers pay employees in expenses for using their car for business travel. They haven’t been lifted for 15 years. It's been a big union ask

@tomhfh I believe it’s about reclaiming expenses when driving your own car for work (e.g. I claimed back 40p, then 45p a mile when working as a local reporter and driving my own car) gov.uk/expenses-and-b…

EXCL: Andy Burnham’s team is working on a plan for his first 100 days in government in the event that he wins a crunch by-election and replaces Keir Starmer, three people tell me The plan is in its early stages but is likely to include reforms to the creaking social care system

Andy Burnham's policy is that he'd like to rejoin the EU at some point Wes Streeting's policy is that he'd like to rejoin the EU at some point Politics is all about timing, emphasis and (in this case) strategic de-emphasis ... 💥
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

It's a bit odd that Andy Burnham's remark today that he's not proposing the UK rejoins the EU *right now* is being characterised as some kind of u-turn. In his interview with me and @kiranstacey last year he said: "I want to rejoin... I hope *in my lifetime* we see this country rejoin the EU". In the same podcast, he also told us: "I don't think there's any prospect of rejoining any time soon." x.com/kiranstacey/st…
