THIS 15 YEAR-OLD KID MADE $800,000 PUMPING STOCKS FROM HIS BEDROOM
Jonathan Lebed was just a high school freshman in Cedar Grove, New Jersey when the SEC showed up at his door in September 2000.
It all started when he was 11 years old.
After school he used to watch CNBC and became obsessed with the scrolling numbers on the screen.
He later told the Wall Street Journal it fascinated him.
At 12, his parents helped him open a brokerage account in his father’s name using $8,000 from savings bonds and birthday cash.
By age 13, he was day trading penny stocks from his bedroom computer.
Between August 1999 and February 2000, while still in high school, he ran 11 separate pump-and-dump schemes on 9 different stocks.
His method was simple and effective: After school he would buy a huge portion (17% to 46%) of the daily volume of a thinly traded penny stock, which usually pushed the price up before he even started posting.
Late at night he would spam Yahoo Finance message boards with 200–300 identical messages under different fake names, calling the stock the “next 1,000% gainer” or “the most undervalued stock in history.”
By morning he’d post another 200–300 messages with even more fake accounts.
Then he’d sit back and watch the price explode as retail traders rushed in chasing the hype while he dumped his entire position into their buying frenzy.
His smallest one-day profit was $11,000.
His biggest was nearly $74,000.
On one trade with Man Sang Holdings, he bought 18,000 shares at $2, hyped it heavily, and sold the next morning at $4.69 for a $37,901 profit in a single day.
He pulled this off 11 times before the SEC caught him. Lebed became the first minor ever charged with stock fraud.
In the settlement he had to return $285,000, but the SEC never went after the other 5 trades he made.
He kept around $500,000 of his $800,000 total haul.
He bought his family a $42,000 Mercedes Benz SUV and went back to high school like nothing happened.
A month later he appeared on 60 Minutes, where his father defended him on national TV with one simple line: “They pick on a kid.”
Today, Jonathan Lebed is 41 years old and still trades professionally while running his own financial newsletter.

Somehow I doubt that.

@matthewgburgess We live in the ongoing Quaternary / Pleistocene Ice Age.
We are VERY fortunate to live in an inter-glacial period within the ice age.
Just 20,000 years ago, huge ice sheets covered N Europe, N America & Asia.
Of course the climate changes.
We can do nothing to stops these cycles.
English

Anyone who wants to argue that climate policy is the only/main reason RCP8.5/SSP5-8.5 is no longer plausible: Please explain how climate policy is the difference between today's world and a world (SSP5-8.5) with all of:
- GDP per capita growth rates immediately doubling everywhere and staying on the higher trajectory for the rest of the century, such that today's poorest, most climate-vulnerable places have average real incomes by 2100 comparable to today's entry-level Google employees, and there is almost no global income inequality (by historical standards) in 2100;
- coal per capita 6x-ing this century compared to its ~100-year plateau, instead of continuing its recent decline;
- so little concern for climate change that we immediately turn off *all* climate policy *globally* (as well as some technological improvements) and keep it off forever; and
- climate change that makes large parts of the tropics unlivable outside for humans for 300+ days a year by 2100 (but we have to still maintain no climate policy and have mega-economic growth despite this deadly heat, to demand enough energy and coal to have sufficient emissions for the scenario).
The scenario doesn't make any sense! We shouldn't have been relying on it as long as we did. And it doesn't help trust in the scientific community to deny or minimize that.
(And for those on the other side: none of this changes the fact that climate change is real and an important problem; see, e.g., the deadly heat point above.)

@JamesMelville The government has not intention of stopping the flow.
If they did, they could stop it immediately.

Steel mills generate large amounts of heat, and are located near large bodies of water to remove the waste heat.
When data centers are placed in the Utah or Wyoming desert, there is no water available to remove the heat.

Tony Heller 🇺🇸 🇯🇵@TonyClimate
9 GW is the equivalent of 90,000,000 100 Watt light bulbs, burning continuously. The heat coming from these data centers is incomprehensibly large.

Mayor of Charlotte, NC asks that we not post about this lady murdered on a Charlotte train by a repeat offender with 14 prior arrests
I say in Iryna’s memory please share and make this go viral! A repeat offender with 14 prior arrests should not be roaming the streets of ANY city! They should be locked up!! Epic failure in the justice system..
We will never forgot her ever

Is oatmeal really a healthy breakfast?
Dr. Mark Hyman blew this up with a fascinating Harvard study.
They gave overweight teens the exact same calories for breakfast: oatmeal, steel-cut oats, or an omelet. Then let them eat freely the rest of the day.
The oatmeal group ate 81% more food than the omelet group. They also had much higher insulin, cortisol, and adrenaline — their bodies were basically in stress mode. Even the steel-cut oats group ate 50% more than the omelet group.
High-carb breakfasts spike blood sugar and insulin, which drives hunger hormones (ghrelin) and crashes energy later. Protein + fat stabilizes blood sugar and keeps you full longer.
This one really made me rethink my old habits. I used to default to oatmeal thinking it was the “healthy” choice. Turns out I was working against my body.
What you eat first thing dramatically affects your hunger, energy, and cravings for the rest of the day.
What’s your go-to breakfast these days — and has changing it made a difference in how you feel?

Arab invaders attacked a convent of nuns and captured a beautiful virgin, whom they offered as a gift to the commander of their troop.
When the commander saw her, he was dazzled by her beauty and sought to corrupt her. She then said to him:
"Wait a moment, for I have learned a skill passed down among virgins, and it can only be performed by a virgin — otherwise, it is of no use."
He asked her: "And what is this skill?"
She replied:
"It is an oil: if someone is anointed with it, no sword or weapon can harm them. You, who go often to war, would greatly benefit from it."
= He said to her: "And how can I be sure of that?"
So she took some oil and said to him:
"Anoint your neck with it and give me your sword so that I may strike you."
= He replied: "No! You shall anoint your own neck first, and I will strike with the sword."
She agreed gladly, anointed her neck with the oil, and said:
"Strike with all your strength!"
He drew his sword, which was very sharp, and she bent her neck. He struck with all his might, and her head rolled to the ground.
Thus, she chose to die by the sword rather than to defile her virginity.
The commander was deeply grieved and wept bitterly for having killed such a beautiful soul. He then realized that she had deliberately deceived him in order to escape defilement and sin…
This is Saint Febronia of Syria.

A journalist spent $11,000 on a forgotten island nobody wanted.
Everyone thought he was insane.
Brendon Grimshaw walked away from a newsroom career in Yorkshire, signed the papers four minutes before midnight on the last night of his Seychelles holiday, and inherited a dead patch of land called Moyenne.
The place was a wasteland. Coconuts so tangled they couldn't even fall to the ground. No wildlife worth mentioning. Just silence.
So he got to work.
Alongside his friend René Lafortune, Brendon spent the next 39 years planting trees one by one. By hand. No machines. No crew. Just two men and a vision.
16,000 trees later, Moyenne looked nothing like the barren rock he'd bought.
Then came the animals. He reintroduced more than 120 giant Aldabra tortoises, a species teetering on extinction. Around 2,000 new birds found their way back to the island. Today, two-thirds of all the fauna in the Seychelles call Moyenne home.
Word got out. Tourism exploded across the region in the 80s, and developers came knocking.
A Saudi prince reportedly slid $50 million across the table for the island.
Brendon said no.
"I don't want the island to become a favorite vacation spot for the rich," he said. "Better let it be a national park that everyone can enjoy."
In 2008, that's exactly what happened. Moyenne became the smallest national park on Earth.
Lafortune died in 2007. Brendon stayed on the island until his own death in 2012. He's buried there, next to his father, surrounded by every tree he ever planted.
He took a dead island and gave it back to the world.
