Our whole neighborhood has a wicked bad smell of natural gas in the air: all across NE #Calgary. Really grateful for @CGYFireFighters department calling me to let me know it’s from the Calgary Airport “de-icing ponds”. That they are confident there is no gas leak. No risk to public health. Glad to hear that - in mean time windows closed, air purifiers up all the way. Apparently this has been an ongoing situation … #yyc #gasleak #gassmell

Sometimes I say something like: “This is what anyone would do in my position.” But the truth is… that’s not always true. Not everyone chooses to be the light in dark places. Not everyone goes the extra mile for people who need help. But some people do. Some people keep showing up. Some people keep caring. Some people choose compassion even when it’s hard. If that sounds like you — own it. Own your goodness. Own the trials and tribulations that shaped you. Own the choice you make every day to be better. Because the truth is… not everyone will. ✨ And that’s exactly why the ones who do matter so much.

Many Canadians, especially members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, are in Puerto Vallarta, where violence has quickly escalated. A shelter-in-place order is in effect. Please stay vigilant and consult the Government of Canada travel advisories for Mexico: travel.gc.ca/destinations/m…

2x weekend shootings in #Calgary NE. “@CalgaryPolice thank you for all you do! This is tough work. Work that has to be done. My only wish is that CPS would have more capacity to solve crimes like this, than have to police poverty, homelessness, addiction/mental health. Maybe one day we will have enough housing infrastructure and supports for folks again - so CPS can get back to the most important work. Like this. I know many Calgarians are tired of the water restrictions, as more announced to come soon, it’s been a long road. The reality is this aging pipeline truly needs repairs until the new one is completed later this year in December. It’s fragile right now, and a failure could happen at any time. So let’s be gracious with ourselves and with each other. Every small effort helps protect our city’s water supply and keeps things running until the permanent solution is in place. Calgary has always pulled together in hard moments, floods, cold snaps, and community crises. We can do this too. 💙 Also a shout out to #YYCcc & Calgary Mayor @JeromyYYC for taking what was a multi year project, to working with partners, to have completed far ahead of schedule this year. 🙏
Jeromy (Pathfinder) Farkas@JeromyYYC

Water restrictions in place beginning March 9 The City of Calgary is moving forward with planned reinforcement repairs to support the stability of the current Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM). This work will target up to nine segments of the existing pipe to support operations and stability. Due to the critical condition of the BSFM and its importance in Calgary’s drinking water system, the City is reinforcing sections of pipe that are experiencing enhanced levels of deterioration. These reinforcements are intended to support continued operation of the BSFM until the new parallel steel pipe is completed and can take over service from the current line. Construction on the planned reinforcements is scheduled to begin March 9, 2026, and is expected to last approximately four weeks. Confirmed reinforcement work will take place for six segments of pipe along 16 Avenue N.W., near Sarcee Trail. Teams are exploring three potential reinforcements at Point McKay Park, further coordination is required due to their proximity with work taking place for the Bearspaw South Feeder Main replacement. Confirmation will be provided as soon as it is available. Water restrictions will be in place beginning March 9 The feeder main will be taken out of service to complete construction. During this time, it’s critical that all Calgarians and the surrounding regions use less water. Outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation will be in effect starting March 9. No outdoor water use will be permitted during this time. We’re asking all Calgarians to save 25-30 litres of water per day indoors by taking the following actions: •Keep showers short, three minutes or less. •Flush toilets only when necessary. •Only run dishwashers and washing machines when there is a full load. The spring feeder main shutdown window also allows additional pieces of work to proceed: •Replacement of existing valves on the feeder main near the Shaganappi Pump Station which will support system reliability in the event of a future failure. •Inspection of the steel pipe connection to the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant, supporting ongoing condition assessment. •Replacement of valves at 33rd Ave. and 89 St., which help control how water moves between the feeder main and the smaller distribution system. Repairs to use concrete reinforcement technique We will repair the identified pipe segments using a concrete reinforcement technique. This approach involves exposing the pipe through excavation, constructing an exterior reinforcing steel cage, pouring concrete around the existing pipe, and backfilling. The construction method is subject to change once the pipe is exposed. Risk of another break remains The City cannot guarantee that the pipe will not break unexpectedly again before or after the reinforcement work takes place. If another break occurs before the planned reinforcements, crews will move immediately to complete portions of the reinforcement work at the same time as the break repair. Preparations are underway to allow crews to mobilize as quickly as possible if this occurs. We understand that these reinforcements will have impacts on the community. We are working with those directly impacted and more information on construction will continued to be shared with the area. Regular updates will be available at calgary.ca/bsfmreinforcem…

@TheAnnaMurphy 100%! Well said @TheAnnaMurphy - ultimately our government has power to help and act preventatively - the question remains … will they?

If Premier Danielle Smith believes Alberta’s challenges can be reduced to immigration and constitutional theatrics, she is choosing distraction over responsibility. Blaming population growth for strained services ignores the deeper reality - years of underinvestment, policy decisions, and governance choices made by this government. Immigrants are not the cause of our housing shortage, health-care wait times, or classroom pressures. They are workers, entrepreneurs, neighbours, and families who contribute every day to the prosperity Alberta proudly claims. Floating the abolishment of the Senate of Canada as a referendum question may generate headlines, but it does nothing to improve affordability, expand access to care, or strengthen economic stability. Political theatrics are not a substitute for competent governance. Albertans deserve leadership grounded in results, not rhetoric. Alberta is strongest when we choose competence over conflict, inclusion over division, and long-term prosperity over short-term politics. We can welcome newcomers, strengthen public services, and demand accountability from our leaders at the same time. Ours is a province, and a nation, built by people who showed up, did the work, and believed in leaving things better than they found them.

@nate_for_8 There can be systemic issues that create unintended consequences. Looking up the system/network possibilities isn’t always the worst idea. I just wonder if we looked at homelessness, poverty and public safety - if we did that same thinking - what then would we discover?!

Nathaniel Schmidt - Ward 8 City Councillor
Blaming a lack of parking for an increase in road rage and using the term “war on cars” days after two Calgarians were killed while walking in marked crosswalks, all because the councillor opposes a development in Ward 8, is irresponsible. 1/ #yyc #yyccc
