Currently in hospital and inadvertently overheard a doctor deliver bad news with incredible skill, dignity, and compassion. ​We talk a lot about hard skills but we don't talk enough about the skill of communication. Such a vital skill to possess for patients and family members.

Believe me when I tell you that you do NOT want an MD that doesn’t bother to look things up.

Doctors use google, doctors use websites,doctors read books almost on a daily They're just humans too, who need to refresh their memories from time to time because they cannot afford to make a mistake

at some point in life you reach an age where you start hearing celebrities names and have no idea who they are and it just continues to happen for the rest of your life

nothing will betray you faster than the front shirt pocket of hospital scrubs one lean forward and your pens and dignity end up on the floor

Please don’t ever blame or shame a tired doctor. I promise you, they are not choosing sleep loss by choice. They’re filling gaps & seeing patients who would otherwise go without care. The solution is to bolster the workforce & build systems that protect rest, not shame doctors.

The woman killed by ICE today was a poet. She won the 2020 Academy of American Poets, University & College Poetry Prize at Old Dominion University.
