An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has begun in China. Authorities claim that the deadly virus may have entered the country through the northwestern border - from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia. In Gansu and Xinjiang, 219 heads of livestock have been confirmed to be infected, with the SAT1 serotype being new to China. The authorities have strengthened border controls, accelerated vaccination, and started slaughtering livestock and disinfection. In 2018, African swine fever entered China from Russia, and the O serotype of foot-and-mouth disease also arrived in 2000 and 2014.
