Jokes aside, historically China has been very hostile to hereditary priviledge. Already in the Qin dynasty the legalists were stressing the need for merit over lineage. In the Tang dynasty they formed the imperial examination and it was greatly expanded under the Song.

No, the "Chinese caste system" is true. You are dealing in euphemism, but in modern China, the "caste system" manifests as restrictions on where and how you can live and work. It is an internal passport system of sorts that makes living in cities difficult for the rural, poor and uneducated people. From that standpoint, Chinese inequality is much more institutionalized and discriminatory than Indian. Typically, you must have a higher education degree, fall above a certain tax bracket, and own a home to secure rights to live in a city. Even then your kids may not be allowed to go to a city school. This is why millions of Chinese migrant workers raise their children by having them stay with grandparents in rural areas. NOBODY likes that. Don't tell them about "sense of belonging". India's constitution, on the other hand, guarantees that everyone from all social and economic classes can live anywhere, which is why Indian cities are overcrowded while the Chinese ones look cleaner. So no matter how you look at it, the Chinese system imposes much more discrimination that the Indian constitution and democracy do not allow. In fact, Indian Constitution enforces REVERSE discrimination, by providing huge education and employment quota on the historically disadvantaged people.

China’s hukou system is the opposite of that abandonment. It gives people roots. It gives local governments obligations. It gives rural people land, village membership, and a place to return to. Comparing this to India’s caste system is obscene. Caste is inherited social imprisonment built on blood, ritual purity, endogamy, untouchability, and spiritual pollution. Hukou is belonging, administration, welfare responsibility, and social anchoring. One says: you are born polluted and must stay below others. The other says: wherever you go, you still have a place that must take responsibility for you. These are not remotely the same thing.
