Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility
This morning, I listened to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation in July. As a keen observer of global politics, my primary interest lies in examining what successful nations do right and the structural factors that cause others to lag or struggle with governance and development.
The Prime Minister’s planned resignation comes amid mounting public frustration over a stagnant economy, a worsening cost-of-living crisis, and a perceived failure to honour key campaign pledges.
Looking inward in our dear country, we can recall our own situation. Before 2015, our President on several occasions championed the call for the then President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over economic hardship and insecurity affecting Nigerians. During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives.
During the 2023 election campaign, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply. He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments—particularly in providing stable power, fighting corruption, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.
At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased. Similar concerns are reflected across other critical sectors such as security, infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts, all of which have regressed. We are in the worst possible condition.
I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity. It would also send a powerful message that public office is a sacred trust, not an entitlement, and help build a society in which future leaders understand that failure carries consequences. Only by ending the culture of impunity can we secure a better future for the society our children will inherit in a New Nigeria that is possible. -PO

- Emir Mohammed Sanusi Mohammed
Message to Tinubu.
"How Can A President That Claimed To Have Inherited A Dilapidated Nigeria Be Spending Public Funds Extravagantly As If You Inherited A Rich And Prosperous Country
How Would You Justify The Following Extravagant Spendings Under Your Government

70 Billion Naira To The National Assembly Members To Buy SUVs At The Cost 160 Million Naira Per One For Senators And House Of Representatives Members Specifically
4 Billion Naira To Renovate Dodan Barrack Lagos Another 3 Billion Naira To Renovate Aguda House

Mr Bayo Onanuga @aonanuga1956, you have called Peter Obi's @PeterObi resignation call "childish" and "anti-democratic", built solely on the fact that Nigeria runs a presidential, not parliamentary, system. But that argument cannot be applied selectively. In 2014, as insecurity under President Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan worsened, particularly following the Chibok abductions, then-opposition leader Bola Tinubu @officialABAT was among the prominent voices who publicly called on President Jonathan to take responsibility for the security failures of his administration, including suggestions that he should consider resigning or, at a minimum, step aside on security grounds. Nigeria was a presidential system then too. The constitutional structure has not changed since 2014.
So the question to you is simple: was Asiwaju Tinubu's position in 2014 also "childish" and "anti-democratic" by the same standard you are applying to Obi today, or does the rule only apply when the President in office is not your principal? Consistency is the first test of credibility in public communication, and this statement fails it.
Beyond the rhetorical contest, the public deserves a Presidency that engages directly with the substance of insecurity, the cost of living, and governance gaps, rather than spending official communication attacking the messenger's right to speak. President Tinubu's office should be less concerned with policing who is "allowed" to criticise him and more focused on demonstrating, through verifiable, dated, audited figures, that the conditions under which ordinary Nigerians live are genuinely improving.
The tone of this statement reads as triumphalist rather than accountable, more focused on basking in recent electoral wins than addressing the lived hardship driving public frustration. Holding office is not the same as governing well, and dismissing critics as "childish" does not substitute for delivering verifiable results that Nigerians can independently confirm.
