The longest road tunnel in Africa is just outside Paarl, South Africa, and it’s getting a R4 billion upgrade🚇
Over 100 million vehicles have passed through the 3.9km Huguenot Tunnel since it opened in 1988.
The current daily average of vehicles passing through the tunnel is 13,000, saving them up to 26 minutes compared to the Du Toitskloof Pass. This has also saved an estimated 5.5 million barrels of fuel to date.
When engineers first drilled the mountain in the 1980s, they actually made two tunnels. However, they only finished the inside of one (the South Bore). The second one (the North Bore) has been sitting empty and unused for 40 years.
Right now, the Huguenot Tunnel is like a narrow two-way street squeezed into a single tube. Cars going in opposite directions have to share the same space. This upgrade is all about opening the second tunnel to create 4 traffic lanes.
Once finished, the tunnels won't be two-way anymore. One tunnel will have two lanes in one direction, and the other will have two lanes in the opposite direction.
Another interesting element is the potential HQ for a "First for Africa" Lab. Stellenbosch University is eyeing the site for the Paarl Africa Underground Laboratory (Paul). If it goes ahead, we’re looking at Africa's first-ever subterranean nuclear physics lab hidden within our infrastructure.
What are your thoughts on a high-tech physics lab next to a major highway tunnel? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

🇿🇦THE RISE OF KEITH KEATING
By Khawula Muzi~08 April 2026
"Ingakho ke, nje ezasi kanje izinto zakwa SAPS u O’Sullivan"
Keith Keating’s story reads like a modern parable of power transferred from uniforms to servers. Once a police officer, Keating built a private empire around forensic and policing software that; over a decade; placed his company at the centre of South Africa’s criminal‑justice information architecture.
What began as a specialist service for evidence management and case tracking evolved into control over systems that the public assumes are owned and operated by the state.
This first instalment of the exposé traces how a single contractor moved from vendor to gatekeeper, the mechanisms that allowed it, and the consequences when critical national systems are effectively outsourced.
ORIGINS: FROM COP TO CONTRACTOR
Keith Keating’s transition from law‑enforcement practitioner to IT entrepreneur followed a familiar arc: technical knowledge, insider access, and the ability to translate operational needs into proprietary software.
Keating founded Forensic Data Analysts (FDA) and positioned the firm as a specialist provider of forensic‑data platforms and policing information systems. Over successive procurement cycles and emergency procurements, FDA secured contracts to supply, host, and maintain systems that manage:
- Firearm permit records
- Evidence recording and chain‑of‑custody logs
- Fingerprint databases
- Organised‑crime intelligence platforms
These systems are not peripheral tools; they are the digital backbone of modern policing. They store permits, link suspects to scenes, preserve forensic continuity, and feed intelligence used in investigations and prosecutions.
THE CONTRACTS: HOW ACCESS BECAME CONTROL
The contracts that gave FDA operational control were structured as long‑term maintenance and hosting agreements. In practice, this meant FDA held the source code, administered servers and controlled access credentials.

So it sounds like our favorite boy.... became a billionaire at the age of 22😅.
Halala Ze Nxumalo 🌟🎉
Ze Nxumalo is connected to the ANC, taxi industry, and to the Connollys. I don't know who the Connollys are. But I assume they have stinging 💰 🤑 💸 for days.
Steve Tshwete was at once the Minister of Police hope it rings bell to you, okay? " Just saying that's how he probably got connected to the police & fast forward.... CAPTURE 📸!
His first business failed. And then he got connected right after that.
His first connection was Steve's son. And they started a business together. Why would they ask a failed businessman to be involved in a taxi industry business as an advisor?
If this is true. Ze Nxumalo is pretty hectic. He had access to nkabis, security company, and the police.💀
