Given some rumors, wanted to post a few clarifications: Farcaster is not shutting down. The protocol works and will continue to work. There were 250,000 MAU in December and over 100,000 funded wallets. The acquirer, Neynar, is a venture-backed startup and plans to shift Farcaster in a more developer-focused direction. As for Merkle, we’re planning to return the full $180M raised back to investors. Over the last 5 years, we tried to be a good steward of investor capital. Finally, I bought my house with Coinbase IPO proceeds.

Farcaster as a "Network Space" Critics of Farcaster such as @DefiIgnas misunderstand it in large part bc they are only trying to fit it into the conceptual boxes of current product categories. It's not entirely their fault: the Farcaster team also kind of has to talk about itself using these same rigid boxes when addressing new audiences, or otherwise the message can be too hard to quickly parse. But the truth is, Farcaster doesn't fit neatly into any boxes of previously existing things. Because it is a New Thing. You learn what this thing is by using it. I am someone who has spent 1,000's of hours on Farcaster over the last few years (chatting about ideas; meeting interesting people; trying out other people's apps; building $bracky – a $10M+ appcoin). In my opinion, what is happening within Farcaster is similar to what was happening with Starbucks at its launch. No one then understood that it wasn't primarily about the coffee, it was about having a "Third Place" outside of work and home, to do a certain kind of activity. Meet with people, use the computer, talk about ideas. Etc. In the same way, Farcaster is not about the crypto, it's about being a digital "Third Place" where you are around people who are inspired to use programmable social and programmable currency to live, build, and interact in novel and better ways. It is a new way of living and working together in the Internet Age. I think this is why many of us on Farcaster are deflated to see it categorized as "just a wallet" when we know from experience that it is much, much more. And also why we are annoyed to hear that we'll "never be a social network" when outsiders compare the usage numbers with Twitter etc. The truth is, it's something in between these two things, while also being superior to both of them in terms of quality and potentiality. I call it a Network Space bc it is in the same direction as @balajis Network State, but without the political ambition. If this sounds interesting, come give it a try. I've been writing a song a day for 17 years and 8 days. That's 5,852 songs. I am building an autonomous songwriting AI, trained on my songs, to write a song a day, forever. He'll issue NFTs of the songs: 1/1s on eth mainnet and editions on @base. 🧵

Hugh v1.0 is a collection of large open source models that have all been trained, prompted and RAG'd on every aspect of my work and life including my songs, emails, text messages and memories. Hugh's Environment is a 2009 rendering of a Mac desktop (2009 being the year I started Song A Day). Hugh's Consciousness is two Llama 70b models that talk to each other all day everyday. They are modeled on "Old Jonathan" and "Young Jonathan" - versions of myself that represent different points of view. Hugh's Consciousness receives input via API from a variety of sources about news, weather, sports, crypto, the world, etc. Hugh has access to and also receives "memories" from a growing RAG database of my memories. Hugh's Consciousness appears in the main iChat window. There is a second iChat window for the Audience (you). Snippets of your chat will also be fed at random to Hugh's Consciousness. If you own at least one 1/1 Jonathan Mann Song A Day, then once a day you can submit a message directly into Hugh's Consciousness (which he will hopefully discuss). You can also "tip" Hugh directly at any time (and he will hopefully thank you). Every hour, Hugh's Left Brain pops up as a terminal window to write a summary of the last hour's worth of Consciousness chat. Every 24 hours, Hugh's Brain summarizes all 24 chats into one full day's summary. Hugh's Hands write the first line of a song based on the full day's summary. Hugh's Heart writes a full lyric based on that first line. This all takes place within a Textedit window. Hugh's Right Brain receives the lyrics and feels out what the tempo, key, genre and style should be. Hugh's Body receives this information along with the lyrics and composes the song. A script splits the lyrics up into 10 second segments. These segments are turned into prompts by Hugh's Right Brain which are fed into @runwayml to create each 10 second segment of video. Then another script stitches all the segments together and voilà! Hugh's Song A Day is complete. Hugh's Left Brain stars the NFT auction. It works just like my website: The auction is live for 24 hours. When you bid, you're automatically sent an edition of the song on @base. You can also buy an edition at anytime. When the auction ends, Hugh mints and sends the 1/1 to the winner (using @gashawkio to optimize for gas).
