@yeungwingfung I read the textbook daily, take notes, don't move on until I understand every part it says including all examples. If I'm really stuck I write it down for my tutor to unblock. We also go over derivations together so I'm not just memorizing formulas. Then I do lots of problem sets

@lindaxie how do you actually go through the textbook each day? and how do you test / know for sure that you really get a concept before you move on?

In my 1st year physics self study, I finished mechanics, waves, and thermodynamics. I started electromagnetism and it's a big jump in difficulty. I'll get through it but def moving much slower to make sure I understand. Multiple people said it was their favorite subject though!

@deltaVee42 No worries! I know basically everyone has good intentions of trying to make me better at physics esp since I'm not actually attending a formal college program

@csjcode I like having a solid base before moving on to more specialization personally esp since I didn't take it in college

@lindaxie I skipped all that, and went straight to wormholes, quantum gravity waves and multidimensional holographic simulation theory.

@lindaxie I don't think you should self study. I think you should try going to Forsyth Tech nanotechnology, and it's very inexpensive Wake Forest Physics department, to gain more understanding of the world. You will sit in the professors library all day long gaining advanced literature.

@deltaVee42 I'm working out of a textbook and it has intro to thermo in 1st year before e&m which was not that hard just lots of equations and applying it. I know 2nd year thermo gets harder

@lindaxie ...year because it's harder than 1st-year E&M. I suppose your tutor is probably teaching you some easy thermo (like mech engineers learn) earlier than physics majors usually learn thermo since your tutor isn't sure you'll stick around long enough to learn the hard stuff. (2/2)

@deltaVee42 Yes, also my tutor and I go through derivations multiple times per week. Advanced econ used a lot of the math you mentioned (took grad classes) plus took advanced math classes and self studied in the past for quant work out of college. It just needs a ton of refresh

@lindaxie My concern is that you're learning physics from a source that's not challenging enough for you to learn what you're capable of (Grok says you majored in Economics at UCSD).

@stringlandscape @_GrayFrog I love this one and was recommended by a lot of people! I'm not using AI, lucky I have an in person tutor that comes weekly

@lindaxie @_GrayFrog IDK if that one's any good but keep in mind that most intro books are pretty terrible. I would try several, and try to get ones as different as possible. I would also avoid any AI, they still struggle and it is impossible to tell if they're making errors when you're learning.

@lindaxie If you want to learn physics at the level of a strong university you need a lot of math, including vector calculus, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, Fourier series, and complex analysis. If you aren't using calculus all the time... (1/2)

@lindaxie Research is very different from coursework, but at some future point perhaps consider how you would add a Poincaré invariant noise (that's how 'quantum noise' is different from thermal noise) to classical electromagnetism.

I started electromagnetism, the last section of my 1st year physics self studying. First thing that blew my mind was learning laser printers work due to forces between charged objects! e.g. positively charged toner adheres only to negatively charged areas "written" by a laser
