I was eight years old. I didn't expect anything. I do remember people in my community saying that the negotiated settlement gave too much power to the ANC, and that the ANC was going to destroy the country eventually. But back then, I was too young to understand any of that.

People celebrate Freedom Day in South Africa because they celebrate the expectations of 1994, but not the fulfillment thereof. The truth is that in many ways that are objectively measurable, South Africa is much worse off now than it was when the ANC took power.

Nissan is doing a good thing; ANC South Africa is a ridiculous place to do business. It is increasingly becoming unpopular for investors. Goodyear and Shell also know. High taxes, crime, corruption, port inefficiencies, and political interference make it extremely unattractive.

President Trump simply wants to trade with Africa, not continue spoon feeding sovereign states at the expense of American taxpayers. This is what normalcy looks like, sovereign states engaging in trade, not relying on aid. Aid will never carry anyone to success. The problem is that people have grown used to corrupt politicians and their fraudulent money grabs. The truth is, America owes Africa nothing. African nations are far too rich in resources to be the world's biggest beggars. Countries sitting on world class deposits of gold, diamonds, oil, lithium, and copper can easily afford world class healthcare systems. Donald Trump is not the enemy here. The real bad guys are the African politicians who use national resources and reserves to build private empires instead of leveraging them to secure good deals for their people.
