Great story of love determination and courage God Bless 🙏 Laurin Long Bank was born in Chapin, South Carolina, and was first diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at age 26 in September 2014. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and a double mastectomy, becoming cancer-free in April 2015, during which time she met her future husband, Michael Bank. In August 2017, the cancer returned aggressively as stage 4, spreading to her bones, liver, and lungs, with doctors giving her a poor prognosis. Despite this, Laurin and Michael decided to proceed with their wedding on March 24, 2018—the third anniversary of when they started dating—refusing doctors’ urging to move the date forward. On her wedding day, the frail but determined 29-year-old Laurin walked down the aisle unassisted (with her brother’s support) in front of 225 guests, danced at the reception, and called it “the best day ever,” made possible with help from a breast cancer nonprofit. The couple spent the next months traveling and cherishing time together, but her health continued to decline as treatment failed. Laurin passed away peacefully at age 30 on October 21, 2018—just seven months after the wedding—while being held in Michael’s arms at their home in Columbia. Her story of defiant love and prioritizing joy over fear in the face of terminal illness inspired many, with Michael honoring her memory and describing her as his “beautiful queen.”

LAURIN BANK’s COURAGEOUS FINAL WEDDING.... Laurin Long Bank was born in Chapin, South Carolina, to the late Dr. Gerald and Faye Long. A vibrant young woman from Colombia, she first faced breast cancer at age 26 when she was diagnosed with stage 2 in September 2014. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and a double mastectomy, emerging cancer-free in April 2015. During this battle, she met Michael Bank, who became her steadfast partner. In August 2017, the cancer returned aggressively as stage 4, metastasizing to her bones, liver, and lungs. Doctors gave her a grim prognosis. Despite this, Laurin and Michael planned their wedding for March 24, 2018. the third anniversary of the day they started dating. Physicians urged them twice to move the date forward, warning she might not survive. Laurin refused, determined that cancer would not dictate their lives. On her wedding day, a frail but resolute 29-year-old Laurin walked unassisted down the aisle, aided by her brother David, in front of 225 guests. She danced at the reception, calling it “the best day ever.” A nonprofit supporting breast cancer patients helped make the dream possible. Michael later said she made him a better person, highlighting their deep bond. The couple spent the following months traveling and cherishing time together. Laurin’s health declined as chemotherapy became ineffective. On October 21, 2018, at age 30, she passed peacefully in Michael’s arms at home in Columbia, just seven months after the wedding. Michael described carrying her to bed and holding her until her last breath, calling her his “beautiful queen.” Laurin’s story inspired many, showcasing defiant love amid terminal illness. Her husband honored her memory, and their wedding became a testament to prioritizing joy over fear in the face of mortality.

Laurin Bank was just 29 when stage 4 breast cancer came roaring back in 2017, spreading to her bones, liver, and lungs. Doctors in Columbia, South Carolina, didn’t sugarcoat it. They sat her and her fiancé, Michael Bank, down twice and begged them to move the wedding up. “You might not make it to March,” they warned. Laurin looked them straight in the eye and said no. March 24, 2018, wasn’t just any date it was the exact third anniversary of the day she and Michael started dating. She refused to give cancer even that small victory. With help from the breast-cancer wish nonprofit In the Middle, the couple pulled off the wedding she dreamed of. About 225 guests watched as Laurin’s brother David walked her down the aisle. No wheelchair. No oxygen tank. Just her in a white lace gown, bald head held high, smiling like the fighter she was. She danced at the reception too. Seven months later, on October 21, 2018, Laurin passed away at home with Michael by her side. She was 30. In his last Facebook post, he called her his “beautiful queen” and described how even morphine couldn’t ease her final hours. Laurin didn’t beat the cancer, but she beat the timeline doctors gave her. She got her wedding day exactly when she wanted it, and she made sure love had the last word.

The Paraglider Sucked 32,000 Feet Up Into a Thunderstorm. In February 2007, German paraglider Ewa Wiśnierska was participating in a training flight for the World Paragliding Championships in New South Wales, Australia. Despite warnings of severe weather, she and several other pilots decided to fly, believing they could maneuver around the developing storm clouds. However, a massive cumulonimbus cloud rapidly expanded and created an incredibly powerful updraft. Caught in the violent thermal column, Wiśnierska was physically sucked straight up into the pitch-black center of the thunderstorm at a terrifying speed of 65 feet per second. Within 15 minutes, the storm had dragged her to an altitude of 32,600 feet, higher than the cruising altitude of a commercial airliner. She was relentlessly pelted by hailstones the size of oranges, struck by nearby lightning, and fully exposed to temperatures plunging to minus 58°F (-50°C). At that extreme altitude, the severe lack of oxygen caused her to pass out for nearly an hour. Medical experts later concluded that losing consciousness actually saved her life, as her heart rate slowed drastically and placed her body in a state of deep hibernation, preserving her vital organs. The frozen paraglider eventually began a rapid, uncontrolled descent, thawing just enough to regain consciousness at 1,500 feet. Covered in severe frostbite, she somehow managed to safely steer her parachute to a landing on a nearby farm, surviving an atmospheric journey that no human being had ever lived through before.

In 2007, a paraglider was sucked into a storm over Australia and carried to 33,000 feet, but somehow survived with only minor frostbite. In February 2007, Polish-German paraglider Ewa Wiśnierska was on a routine training flight in Australia when a massive thunderstorm swept her up in its updrafts. She was carried to nearly 33,000 feet, higher than most commercial jets fly, in temperatures of around -50°C, with almost no oxygen. She lost consciousness for around 40 minutes. Miraculously, as the storm weakened, her paraglider descended on its own. She survived with only minor frostbite. Doctors later noted that losing consciousness may have actually saved her, as her body required less oxygen in that state. A fellow pilot, Chinese paraglider He Zhongpin, was caught in the same storm and was not as lucky, his body was found nearly 50 miles from the launch site.

This incredible survival story is about Ewa Wiśnierska (sometimes spelled Wisnierska), a Polish-German paraglider and former World Cup winner.f81dad On February 14, 2007, she was training near Manilla, New South Wales, Australia, ahead of the World Paragliding Championships. Despite a forecast of violent thunderstorms, she launched anyway. While trying to skirt a building cumulonimbus cloud (the type that produces heavy rain, hail, and extreme turbulence), she got caught in a powerful updraft known as “cloud suck.”7cd020 Her GPS later showed she was ripped upward at speeds of up to 20–30 m/s (about 4,000–6,000 ft per minute). She reached a peak altitude of 10,054 meters—32,986 feet (roughly 33,000 ft), higher than Mount Everest and the typical cruising altitude of commercial airliners. Inside the storm, conditions were apocalyptic: temperatures plunged to around –40°C to –50°C (–40°F to –58°F), she was battered by hail and lightning, and the air was so thin she suffered severe hypoxia.5722d1 Wiśnierska blacked out from lack of oxygen for 30–60 minutes (accounts vary slightly on the exact duration) and was unconscious for much of the highest part of the flight. She became completely encased in ice. Doctors later suggested that passing out may have actually helped save her by lowering her metabolic rate and oxygen demand. When she finally regained consciousness, she was still high up but managed to descend and land safely about 60 km (37 miles) from her launch site after a total flight time of around 3.5 hours. She suffered only minor frostbite and bruises—no serious injuries.c9d418 Tragically, she wasn’t alone in the storm. A 42-year-old Chinese paraglider named He Zhongpin (or Zhongpin He) was caught in the same weather system and died. His body was found about 47–50 miles away; the cause was attributed to lack of oxygen, extreme cold, and possibly a lightning strike.4551c7 Wiśnierska later described the terror: “The glider kept climbing, climbing, and I couldn’t see anything. Then it got dark.” She called the experience like being “a leaf from a tree going up” in the immense power of the storm.4c730e Here’s a photo of Ewa Wiśnierska in her paragliding gear (a more recent shot showing her in action):

In February 2007, Polish-German paraglider Ewa Wiśnierska was training near Manilla, Australia. • Despite thunderstorm warnings, she took off for a practice flight. • A massive cumulonimbus cloud sucked her upward in a powerful updraft. • She rocketed from ~2,000 ft to nearly 33,000 ft (10,000+ m) — higher than most jets fly. • Temperatures dropped to -50°C, hail pounded her, and lightning cracked nearby. • Severe lack of oxygen caused her to black out for ~40 minutes. • Doctors say passing out likely saved her — it slowed her body and cut oxygen demand. • Covered in ice, she drifted unconscious until the storm weakened. • Her paraglider auto-descended; she woke up and landed safely ~60 km away. • She suffered only minor frostbite and bruises. • Tragically, fellow pilot He Zhongpin died in the same storm — his body was found ~50 miles away. Nature doesn’t negotiate. Same sky, two very different endings. 🪂🌩️

The story of Ewa Wiśnierska is a powerful reminder that nature doesn’t negotiate. A routine flight over Australia turned into a near-space survival lesson. At extreme altitudes, the body faces hypoxia, freezing temperatures, and loss of control, which is why pilots are trained to avoid cumulonimbus clouds at all costs. What stands out is that losing consciousness, which sounds terrifying, actually reduced her oxygen demand and may have helped her survive. Meanwhile, the tragic fate of He Zhongpin shows how unpredictable storms are, even for experienced pilots. Big takeaway: weather awareness isn’t just a precaution in aviation and adventure sports, it’s life or death. Respect the sky, because once you’re inside a thunderstorm, skill alone may not be enough.
