Very interesting that the attention of the House of Lords reform being championed here is religiously motivated. There is a conversation to be had about representation of different religious groups in the Lords. But I for one am grateful for the way that the Bishops use their voices to champion issues that are in the public interest, issues such as: Social Justice and Poverty: Advocating for policies to address poverty, inequality, and welfare reform, with a focus on supporting the vulnerable. Refugees and Asylum Seekers: Supporting compassionate immigration policies, including refugee protection and family reunification. Climate Change and Environmental Stewardship: Urging for action on climate change, promoting sustainable practices, and protecting the environment. Human Rights and Religious Freedom: Advocating for human rights and religious freedom, both domestically and internationally. Family and Community Well-being: Supporting policies that strengthen family life, mental health resources, and community cohesion. They have no political affiliation so are free to raise these concerns without subscribing to a party line. If we are going to talk about Lord's reform wouldn't it be good to talk about the abuse of it by @GavinWilliamson 's own party: For example, during Boris Johnson's tenure as Prime Minister, 14 out of 50 Conservative peers appointed were either already significant donors or went on to donate substantial sums to the party. Notable individuals include billionaire businessmen Michael Spencer and Michael Hintze, along with banker Peter Cruddas. In total, these appointments contributed approximately £51.8 million in donations, with most going to the Conservative Party. About 27 individuals who were donors received peerages over the past decade, reflecting a concerning correlation between donations and appointments to the House of Lords

👏 @GavinWilliamson has said he’ll seek to amend the hereditary peers bill to remove the “unfairness” and “injustice” that is the bishops’ bench in HoL. He’s right - there’s no justification for automatic seats for clerics in our legislature!

The total of hospitality & gifts *declared* by Keir Starmer since 2019 is £12,500 *less* than Boris Johnson accepted from Lord Brownlow for home decor. He tried to keep this *secret* by claiming he couldn't remember who'd paid & had lost the phone containing all relevant messages

@montie 'This would be a huge story if it was a Tory MP' You and I (plus many others) know this is absolute claptrap. 312 Tory MPs voted against forcing rented homes to be made fit for human habitation. No Labour, Liberal Democrat or SNP MPs voted against it. fullfact.org/economy/did-mp…

It is utterly shameful of Rishi Sunak to blame NHS staff for his failures on NHS waiting lists. It won’t wash with the public.

Today we remember John Smith who died thirty years ago. I remember being with him the night before he died when he ended his speech with "all we ask is the opportunity to serve." John's whole life was a testimony to the nobility of public service.

Starmer: “I promise this- a politics which treads a little lighter on all our lives. That’s the thing about populism or nationalism…It needs your full attention, needs you constantly focussing on this week’s common enemy. And that’s exhausting.” Really interesting section.

The whole Mone saga, the contracts, the lies, the entitlement and the fake remorse, make me angry beyond belief. Every aspect of it points back to successive Tory PMs.

Reminder: Immigration is NOT the reason that you CANT get a hospital appointment Immigration is THE ONLY reason that you CAN get a hospital appointment An NHS is only surviving on immigrant doctors, nurses & support staff If you want to blame someone, think who’s in power….

Johnson was wrong to say that similar infighting and toxic comments existed in No 10 under Thatcher, or that what he called being ‘argumentative’ assisted good government. People were focused on the job, not on tearing each other apart.

Worth stepping back to consider that during an economic crisis and a crumbling and overstretched asylum system which costs untold millions because we have to house asylum seekers whilst their claims are (not) being considered our government is now focussed on spending millions in public money and thousands of hours of civil servant time on fixing the asylum system in… … Rwanda

BREAKING 🚨 | Rishi Sunak’s decision to cut the banking surcharge is costing the public purse £29 MILLION a week, according to our report. We estimate that the Treasury will lose at least £1.5 BILLION annually over the next four years as result of the change introduced by Rishi Sunak when he was Chancellor.

Sometimes something is simply too delicious; in this case it’s the ridiculous Tory Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson having to apologise to a doctor by donating to the British Medical Association’s… wait for it….strike fund. Absolutely glorious. 🏆
