No murder weapon. No body. No access to Afghan crime scenes after 15+ years. No forensics, no post-mortems, no projectiles recovered. The witnesses are all battling PTSD, which will get ripped apart in cross-examination. Memory loss, faded combat memories, all the usual side effects and the defence will hammer that hard. And remember, it still has to be proven beyond reasonable doubt. Good luck with that. No jury's going to convict Ben Roberts-Smith on this evidence. And don't get me started on the timing… arresting him right before Anzac Day, in front of his family as he gets off the plane, with the cameras already there waiting like they knew exactly what was coming. Something here really doesn't add up.

Why aren’t the politicians who beat the drums of war to send our soldiers to foreign wars ever arrested whilst with their family in front of a waiting media? How is it fair that politicians who cheer the bombing of innocent civilians from the safety of their armchairs are never held to account for their unjust and barbaric actions, yet soldiers who risk their lives enveloped in the fog of war for years on end are? The double standards are just plain wrong.

Albanese is about to deliver a line that would have been unsayable in mainstream politics five years ago. (Speech scheduled for today at the National Press Club). The free market consensus - cut TAFE, offshore manufacturing, let multinationals price-gouge gas, store your fuel reserves overseas, didn’t die because the left finally won the argument. It died because Trump and others like him, who were and are the champions of Neo liberalism torched it. Not on purpose but because they were so blinded with their school yard international doctrine, they have been completely outwitted by the Iranians. Over the last month or so, they criticised other countries for not falling in line behind an America that was blowing up the very order they’d built their politics around, live…in real time. That’s the vacuum Albanese is walking into.
