@TomHoldsworth7 @BenAllenGP Patients also often not aware of potential for side effects and other potential downstream harmful effects, especially for young children. I find people often more reluctant to take if these are mentioned and discussed

Dr: 'From carefully listening to & examining you, I can say that you have a virus Unfortunately antibiotics won't help' Patient: 'You don't understand It's been 2 weeks The cough is really bad I know antibiotics will work So you going to leave me like this? What a waste of time'

@DrGoblin3 @BenAllenGP Don’t we just come across the bad examples on Twitter…? I work with some excellent AHPs who are very open about their role with patients

@BenAllenGP Disagree. Numerous examples of misrepresentation, disingenuity and underhand agendas from many PAs I’m afraid. Jamie Saunders, Raj Gill, Emma Glen just to name a few. Sometimes it really IS their fault, Ben.

There is a valid, important debate about the role of PAs & AAs. Let's be mindful that it is not THEIR fault. Largely caring & compassionate people who got a job wanting to make a difference to patients like the rest of us.

@justanormalgp You have to apply for further speciality training at the start of F2 when many don’t yet know what specialty they want to apply for. Getting some more clinical experience is no bad thing. If I had applied in F2 before my GP rotation I would never have applied to GP training

Here are some interesting stats. 4 in 10 GPs leave GP within 5 years of training. In 2018 only 38% of second year doctors, F2s, went into further training, the rest left the country, left medicine or took a break. 48% of junior doctors plan to leave medicine. The system is sick

@apsmunro It sounded cheesy at Med school - but ICE (ideas, concerns, expectations) is key!

There is a mismatch between the goal of parents and health providers in primary care for children Most parents presenting to primary care are just seeking reassurance The main goal of health providers is defensive practice against rare, serious outcomes Result = overtreatment

Do you work in a care home in England or Wales? Can you help us with our research developing a new approach to managing care home residents with possible urinary tract infection? We would love to talk to you to hear your views! Venus@soton.ac.uk bit.ly/VENUSstudy @NIHRSPCR
