The cruise ship hantavirus outbreak worries me for two reasons: 1. The absence of a clear, trusted public health voice from the US. 2. The temptation to reassure or alarm prematurely while the investigation is still evolving. @NEJM Link in reply:

Is it just me or is there something very "global north" about the rhetoric around hantavirus? Fundamentally this is not a new virus, is showing no shift in dynamics, and there have been *worse* outbreaks before. Only difference is it's affecting people from "rich" nations.

The lesson I take from this picture isn't that we should shame people (who are socially distanced) experiencing a crisis (the travelers deserve our compassion), but that it is very hard for human beings to properly wear masks for an extended period of time. And public health guidance must acknowledge that reality.

Rich white Boomers mask properly to save your own life from a virus that has a 50/50 shot of killing you, challenge level: impossible

@jeremyfaust Mildly positive I presume means low level PCR (high ct value) This is actually relatively important in interpreting the meaning of the test in the setting of an asymptomatic individual Poor wording perhaps but not stupid or irrelevant

They buried the lede. *One of the Americans en route home has tested positive for the Andes Hantavirus* Fortunately, the receiving facility is equipped to handle this. But whoever wrote that someone tested “mildly positive” is an idiot. They are PCR +. They have it.
HHS@HHSGov

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus. All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus. As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination. Upon arrival at each facility, each individual will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition.

@N95Anaesthetist You would rather wear an N95 in Sydney, Australia, to protect yourself from hantavirus on a cruise ship in Tenerife?

@apsmunro Is the vaccine near to ready for production/marketing and is that why the media have been briefed to create a panic about the virus?

New update on the hantavirus outbreak The news has developed at pace, with significant case and genomic updates in the past few days It is clear this will not be the next pandemic, and I will explain why Link in following post

Update by Dr. Alasdair Munro ( @apsmunro ) about #hantavirus👇 "Given all we know about the Andes virus and the extensive efforts being put into contact tracing and containment, the likelihood of the current outbreak turning into a pandemic is close to zero."

A very key part of covid was the huge differential in severity Vast numbers of people with mild or even subclinical infections able to unwittingly spark new super spreader events No chance of such an eventuality here
JacquiC@jacquic71

@LucyGoBag The advantage is that this isn't 'novel'. Knowledge of how it spreads and initial cause already out there. Different with COVID - not clear how it started, then lots of people very ill quickly, with no info on how to identify or treat it initially.

20 years ago, I published serological assays for diagnosing Andes virus infections. Seeing the current #hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship is a reminder that reliable IgM/IgG diagnostics remain essential for outbreak response and contact tracing karger.com/int/article-ab…

I'm thinking of switching to Claude simply because I'm tired of uttering the four syllables of "ChatGPT" when I make reference to it. It's so much easier just to say, "I asked Claude."
