Let’s talk about Colorado’s claim to being the “gold standard” for marijuana legalization — particularly when it comes to processor safety. Unfortunately, Colorado is lagging behind many other states in this critical area. Florida has set a much stronger example by prioritizing rigorous safety standards and enforcement. In contrast, Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) has rules on the books but fails to enforce them. I know this from direct experience: I inspect cannabis processing facilities and equipment across all 50 states. While Colorado has some basic regulations, the MED has not conducted meaningful compliance checks since 2014. This lack of oversight is especially dangerous because processors routinely work with highly flammable and pressurized solvents — butane, propane, ethanol, carbon dioxide, and others. Without proper enforcement, these operations put workers, employees, and even the surrounding public at serious risk. History has already shown us this: multiple accidents and near-misses have occurred over the years. I can assure you there are still numerous facilities operating at elevated risk today. It is only a matter of time before a serious — or even fatal — incident occurs. Bottom line: Colorado is not the gold standard for safe cannabis legalization. Not even close.

It’s 4/20, Colorado! 🍃 As Governor, our state created the gold standard for marijuana legalization.  Now, we’re taking it national, with our legislation to set us up for success when marijuana becomes legal nationwide.
